Osborn wasn't moved to accomplish the merger edit

I researched the alleged merging of Fairfield and Osborn by removing Osborn houses from their basements and I found evidence that that statement is confused. Osborn was moved adjacent to Fairfield in the early 1920s (approximately 1918-1924) due to the flood control projects related to the 1913 Dayton flood. This event made international news and there were even movies made about it. In the 50th Fairborn Anniversary calendar, I saw a replica of a poster which said, "Osborn, the town that picked up and moved" And, on the wall of the Fairborn Library are photographs that include the moving of one house in Osborn. In 1925 when Mary Parker Poole, the author of the history I read, moved to Osborn, she dug up lilacs from the former yards of houses in Old Osborn for her own yard.

Later (in the 1940's I believe) a movement grew up to merge the two towns. And in 1950 after a vote, the two administrations and duplicated services were merged, duplicated street names were replaced, and a new town name was adopted. Some citizens challenged the merger, but were defeated in court.

In the 1955 history I read, nothing was mentioned of a second moving of Osborn. Thus I believe that there were two events, the moving of Osborn in the 1920's and the merging of Osborn and Fairfield in the late 40's and early 50's. I think that this is especially certain given the fact that the author of the history (1) devoted an entire chapter to the first moving of Osborn and (2) was an Osborn resident from 1925 until the writing of the history and (3) devotes lots of space to recent historical minutia including the (then) recent death by asphyxiation of one anonymous Fairborn resident trying to save his children from a fire and yearly expansions in the land area of Fairborn. So she certainly would have mentioned either plans to move Osborn again in the future or a move that had taken place so recently in the past.

Thus if there are no objections in the next few days, I will correct the erroneous statement and add a statement about the Osborn, "the town that picked up and moved."

You are correct, Poole's comprehensive book on Fairborn's early history only mentions one move, and yes, the merger happened in 1950 due more to proximity issues.Brian0324 22:10, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Failed GA edit

FAIRBORN, OHIO
There are a number of areas where this article need substantial improvement

  • The notable residents section would need inline sources to show that the people are residents or natives of Fairborn, since it would not be acceptable to use the articles themselves as sources - Wikipedia is not a reliable source
  • In general, lists of people in articles aren't generally viewed favourably in FA/GA, so it might simply be best to remove the list to a separte article or create a category and avoid such things.
  • The lead needs to be expanded.
  • Article lacks many sections
    • There is no information on the politics of the area. What congressional district does the city fall within, at federal and state level? Is the area Republican or Democrat? What are the political issues in the area.
    • There is no information about transport in the area - buses, railways or how to travel around
    • No information on how the local council works
    • Needs a section about the school system in the area. At the moment there is only one piece of information about a high school which is the largest (is this in size or student numbers) and the presence of a nearby university
    • Needs more information on amenities like hospitals, electricity/water supply, sports facilities, places of worship and so forth.
    • Religious statistics are missing from the article
  • In general, the article needs a lot more sources. Larges parts of the article need to be sourced.
  • The later part of the history section is not actually history but the contemporary situation in the town, so it shoul d be in a section about the town culture or town economy section.
  • Many of the single-sentence sections in teh history section need to be merged.
  • some links need to be inlined and filled in properly
  • Years need to be wikilinked consistently. Plaese wikilink all or none.
  • The geography section needs to be expanded
  • With the demographics section, it would be good do get some demographic trends to see how the community is evolving - is it getting older, younger, richer, poorer, more unequal, more racially diverse, etc.

The Mall at Fairfield Commons edit

The Mall at Fairfield Commons is in Beavercreek. I realize it's just on the other side of I-675 and is generally associated with the Wright State / Nutter Center area, but there is no mention of Fairborn in the Wikipedia article. I propose it be removed from See also. Jb45424 (talk) 04:30, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
