Merger proposal edit

Formal request has been received to merge the article 1982 Arab Nations Cup into Arab Nations Cup; dated: September 2018. Proposer's Rationale: This very short article is all about a cancelled sporting event and the little content it has can be added into the respective target articles. Discuss here. Richard3120 (talk) 16:39, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

statistics provided are incomplete edit

The Arab Cup was played 3 times under the name of the Palestine Nations Cup. 1972 1973 1975. Therefore, the statistics provided are incomplete. Medjdi (talk) 19:55, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

FIFA Arab CupArab cup – Return to original name of main article by removing of current partner. Hi, the article lists all Arab cups while the partnership with FIFA only took place for the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and the previous editions are not in partnership with FIFA [1], [2], [3].

PS: I have already had a discussion with Hashim-afc, who wants to keep branding for all Arab cups. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 01:49, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose: The FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the FIFA Arab Cup was going to continue under the umbrella of FIFA: see here. There have also been news recently that FIFA are likely to organise the next edition of the competition in 2025: see here. FIFA also acknowledged the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup as being a continuation of the previous Arab Cups: see here. The article should therefore not be moved as its current name is correct. Hashim-afc (talk) 02:08, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
In principle, there was to be a partnership for 2023 [4], [5], at present it is only speculation for 2025 and previous editions are not in partnership with FIFA, but this article covers all Arab cups. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 02:23, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
The article should only be moved in the event that the next edition of the tournament is officially announced without FIFA's involvement and with the name "Arab Cup". As of now, this has not happened, and as per my points made above, it looks very unlikely that this will happen. Hashim-afc (talk) 02:30, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
You are showing bad faith, there have been 13 editions and only one bears the name of the 2021 FIFA Arab cup, which already has an article.
Therefore, the title of the article is irrelevant, it's propaganda and a duplicate.
If you are not happy then you could create an article on the FIFA partnership of 2021 and (maybe) 2025.

  • Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. GiantSnowman 11:23, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - this is the same competition which has re-branded; we only need one article, with the current article title reflecting the current tournament name. Any change in name for a particular edition can be reflected in that edition's article, see also Category:Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, which deals with both African CON and Africa CON. GiantSnowman 11:27, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It must be clarified that the UAFA, the association which organizes these competitions, is not affiliated with FIFA and it is an independent association, hence the presence of a partnership between them only for 2021. So you are in favor of the change because the previous editions are not in partnership with FIFA and these two associations are independent.
The comparison is irrelevant because the competition and Confederation of African Football which organizes it, have been affiliated with FIFA therefore recognized de facto since the beginning.
For example: CAF Champions League is in partnership with TotalEnergies and the title of the article has not changed.
By the way Arab Cup is still redirected to FIFA Arab Cup... Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 12:08, 23 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per above. Idiosincrático (talk) 01:00, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Addition (because it seems that the argument is not relevant enough): UAFA, the association running this competition, is independent of FIFA, FIFA sponsored the competition for 2021. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 02:00, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

That is incorrect. FIFA organised the competition, they are not a sponsor. Hashim-afc (talk) 02:04, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
If it organizes then it sponsors.
The most important thing is to know if FIFA participated in all editions of this competition otherwise the return to original title (Arab cup) is obligatory. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 02:49, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per WP:NAMECHANGES. FIFA organised the last edition (and are not a sponsor name like some users here are claiming), and reliable sources currently use FIFA in the name. If a future edition doesn't have FIFA in the name, as it isn't run by FIFA, then and only then is it correct to remove FIFA from the name. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:34, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • And the proposer also appears to be a WP:SPA on this issue. They have 49 edits, of which 15 are on this talkpage, 15 are on a user talkpage about this same article, and other edits are also on this issue like [6] and trying to also remove FIFA from FIFA Arab Cup records and statistics. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:38, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Fact : UAFA is an independent association, FIFA formed a partnership for the last edition only.
Thus, this is still no reason to rename all old editions of Arab Cup as is the case for La Liga article with its current sponsor EA Sports and many other competition. There is also racism against minorities and FIFA is supposed to ban ethnic competitions, it's sourced in this discussion or you can read ethic code of FIFA (Discrimination/p.19)
You don't read sources neither content and you allow yourself to judge me by comparing my number of modifications with Hashim-afc.
    Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 13:14, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
As has already been explained to you - we use the current name of the competition for the main article, and the contemporary name for individual tournament articles. GiantSnowman 15:46, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Partnership is not in the main article title. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 16:20, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
...you're the only person who disagrees. Seeing as you cannot understand, further discussion with you is pointless. GiantSnowman 16:23, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't mean anything, many people are against nuclear energy and yet it is one of cleanest energies in the world. Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 16:35, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose and WP:SNOW close. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:34, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
    Why are you opposed ? Wokemanwhowalks (talk) 23:42, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment – I understand the nominator's point, but it still seems hasty to me since the last edition of the competition was held under the auspices of FIFA. If a new edition takes place organized by UAFA, AFC, or another similar organization, the discussion will be better suited. Svartner (talk) 14:28, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
