editI came across somebody observing that there were no good free images of E. purpureum and that images IDed as E. purpureum were really E. fistulosum. Indeed, almost all of the images on Wikimedia commons (Eupatorium purpureum and Eutrochium purpureum) have uniformly purple stems, which is not consistent (FNA key) with E. purpureum, though I think some of the commons have inflorescences consistent with E. maculatum. There's one photo that might be E. purpureum, but it's poorly focused.
