UN = United Nations? edit

Does the acronym UN in the context of this page really stand for United Nations? I read the ERG (external link) and it only refers to the ID number as UN/NA once, without any expansion. ChrisEich 17:44, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it really does stand for United Nations. The number is a reference number assigned by the UN "Committee of Experts on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods and on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification." There are some numbers/proper shipping names that are permitted in US regulations but do not appear in the UN Recomendations. These numbers are preceeded by NA rather than by UN. Therefore some refer to the US list as UN/NA numbers. In Air Transportation there are numbers assigned by ICAO that are not in the UN list. They are preceeded by ID rather than by UN, so some refer to the numbers as "UN/ID Numbers." Etc., etc.
