The William Hawes now mentioned in the article was the brother of Benjamin Hawes. The one who helped Elizabeth Garrett was a governor of Middlesex Hospital: various sources say he was a doctor or surgeon, but as far as I can see that doesn't check out. What else William Hawes did is somewhat obscure to me, but there was a "William Hawes, Esq." of the period who was involved with boards and learned societies generally, so likely it is him.
