Wikipedia Story
editToday Fanning interviewed Jimmy Wales regarding the accuracy of Wikipedia. One of her claims was that someone had put that she was the brother of Bernard Fanning on her Wikipedia page.
Dig a little firther, and you find that [this][1] was the innacurate edit.
If you search for the [IP address on whois][2], you get this: OrgName: Asia Pacific Network Information Centre OrgID: APNIC Address: PO Box 2131 City: Milton StateProv: QLD PostalCode: 4064 Country: AU
Do a search in [Google for Milton, Queensland and the Nine Network][3] and the first result points to a company that has "worked for Silicon Data, Memorex Telex and The Nine Network in IT management"
Seems slightly suspect, especially seeing as the suburb of Milton has only 1,500 people. Wmoisis 01:33, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
NSlookup returns the name of the machine of that IP Address as: CPE-58-169-167-43.qld.bigpond.net.au
- lol, nice research. But what exactly are you implying? You don't work for media watch do you lol? Rothery 05:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ha, no, but it seemed a little suspect to me. What am I implying? I guess that maybe it could have been set up, however there is no real firm evidence to back it up. That was from 5 minutes on Google, maybe someone can do a little more snooping to find out. Perhaps I should contact Media Watch :p. Wmoisis 09:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I thought that for a moment too, but the edit was made back last year sometime. Wasn't Yana Wendt still hosting it then anyway lol? Rothery 13:05, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- APNIC is just the Asia Pacific version of ARIN. Looking up there [4] only gives Telstra Internet, ie BigPond. Mark Hurd 13:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- You should definitely put it to either media watch or even better, The Chaser's War on Everything. I watched that show and immediately though, "yeah I bet they put that there themselves."
There was a recent follow up episode as well, where the upstanding journalists documented various other incorrect facts that popped up in the history - bearing in mind that those were obviously vandalism. They closed the article with a sarcastic interlude of Bernard Fanning's music. I can't wait 'till the Chaser's get their hands on this one.
Vandalisim Central
editIt seems that after Ellen Fanning made a story about Wikipedia many people have attacked her on her website. I have semi protected this page. Harrison Bass - HB4026 01:06, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- FYI, just adding the template doesn't do anything. Only an admin can protect an article. In fact, adding the template to an unprotected article is actually a bad thing - an admin may see it and mistakenly believe that it is already protected. I have, however, s-protected it so now it is protected. To any other admin, if you feel it should be unprotected as a page likely to be hit by first time visitors (you can edit this page right now!), please feel free to do so. --BigDT 01:16, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Appreciated. At the end of the interview I searched on Wikipedia to see if her alleged "the sister of the singer Fanning" appears on her page. I was surprised to see someone had posted an emotionally charged edit. Glad its removed. FunAdventure 02:29, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Lol, I did too... :P It's good to see that when these things are happened upon, they're changed, but it's also a bad thing, as people come and vandalise the article too... Pretty surprising, too, I normally don't watch Sunday... User:Ss112 03:30, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Smoker
editFanning used to a heavy smoker, smoking for twenty years as evidenced by her teeth. She has cut down to one cigarette before bed.
- You have been adding a claim about this person being a smoker [5]. I have no earthly idea if she is or was ... but under WP:BLP, this kind of thing cannot be added unless it is (1) sourced and (2) not giving undue weight to a minor episode in this woman's life. (In other words, it isn't significant that some guy smokes unless they campaign against smoking or something. It would be like mentioning that George W Bush likes steak. So what?) --BigDT 01:21, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, BigDT, although I think someone simply vandalised the page, trying to make a joke, albeit, a lame one. User:Ss112 03:27, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
The "Wikipedia" reference
editMention removed. 10:41, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Why? I don't see any reason it shouldn't be mentioned. Either give a good reason or it goes back up. Rothery 05:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Children
editWe should teach young children how to meditate which is teaching them to know themselves. I personally believe it would make them better humans 49.195.119.144 (talk) 07:53, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
