Talk:Eldorado, Illinois

Latest comment: 7 years ago by InternetArchiveBot in topic External links modified

When I was on vacation recently in Provincetown, I was talking to a fellow who lives in Eldorado. He claimed that the origin of the name was "Elder Reader," a role played in Lutheran churches during responsive readings. The town was called Elder Reader until the railroad came through and thought it was a typo. They changed the name to Eldorado. I did look at the webpage of the local history society and they didn't mention anything about this story so I don't know if it's true. True or not, it is much more interesting than mere Spanish origin.

It's truly a shame that Chris Drone stepped down as mayor. Ever since then, the cows just haven't been the same. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.137.230.85 (talk) 20:25, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

In researching my ancestry I found "Elderado" I discovered one Hon. Samuel Elder and his son Maj. William S. Elder to be co-founders of the town . They along with Joseph & William Read laid out the village on Aug 22 1857. William was very instrumental in bringing the railroad to the area , virtually sealing the success of the town.It is also said the name change came shortly after the r&r arrived. This story though not as colorful sure seems more accurate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.215.236.229 (talk) 18:18, 1 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
