Gentlemen,

I am generally full of praise for Wikipedia articles. For once, it seems you could improve your page on economics of the Virgin Islands by detailing the fiscal situation: Does the Us fiscal laws apply, how , etc Thanks for considering my request — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.193.180.26 (talk) 18:17, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

2012 November cleanup

edit

Hi, here are the reasons behind the cleanup:

  1. I don't mean to censor the history regarding slavery, but this content is more about the history of the islands in general, rather than their economy specifically.
  2. Similarly, other historical events have been trimmed back to aspects affecting the economy.
  3. Removing outdated info (which is also unreferenced) from "economic overview"
  4. Job market: please link to specific pages and provide inline references to support text
  5. Removed WP:peacock terms, such as "a leading newspaper", "a revolutionary program".
  6. Removed content with WP:advert tone from YouthNet section
  7. References are used to support specific statements, therefore the previous "References" section was actually a list of External Links, so it has been renamed to this.
  8. Repetition of tourism being major source of employment has been removed
  9. "A large number of job vacancies are posted by the small scale businesses" is not a meaningful statement. Reporting the percentage of employment which is by small-business, would be useful if this info could be found
  10. The number of job vacancies at a particular time is also not very meaningful. And is this info current? Sorry to be skeptical but all the references to career.vi smell like WP:spam.

Yes, and four years later, the article needed even more work (in 2017). I have made the changes, including major updates, and more recent specifics, all with citations to valid sources. See the next Talk topic; a chart of data would also be useful. Peter K Burian (talk) 19:52, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Peter K Burian Great work. The referencing, and overall quality of the article, is now looking much better, thanks to your efforts. 1292simon (talk) 08:41, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @1292simon; I appreciate a challenge. It was tough to find information until I eventually found the May 2016 report. Of course, the current financial crisis is in the news every day down in the Caribbean. Cheers! Peter K Burian (talk) 20:35, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

2017 Cleanup AND Updated chart re: the economy

edit

I have done a cleanup/update with the most important info in the text of the article. I deleted data that had no citations and/or was badly out of date.

I also added recent info about the economy with quotes from highly reliable sources. Unfortunately, the really reliable sources seem to have data only for 2012 and 2013 with a bit about 2014. Still, that is better than newer data without citations to reliable sources.

There is no value in outdated info in a chart, especially without specifics as to the year of the data, and especially if there are no citations to valid sources that confirm the accuracy.

I don't have time to build a chart of the format usually used on Wikipedia, but I did add a brief one. A great deal more data for 2012 and 2013 is available at https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/vq.html Central America and Caribbean :: VIRGIN ISLANDS Peter K Burian (talk) 20:54, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

I also added some stats from this May 2016 report but it has other useful info too. http://www.usviber.org/Economic%20Review%20May%202016.pdf Peter K Burian (talk) 23:17, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
