Correct Rcat tag edit

@Wbm1058: I used {{R from incorrect name}} because this is the incorrect name for the article title, since the article apparently needs disambiguation. What RCat would you use? voorts (talk/contributions) 19:50, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Voorts: Usual conventions suggest that East Kilbride and Strathaven (UK Parliament constituency) should be an {{R from unnecessary disambiguation}} redirecting to East Kilbride and Strathaven, which is an unambiguous topic not requiring disambiguation. But Category:Proposed constituencies of the Parliament of the United Kingdom points to a local naming convention that requires disambiguation. I don't know quite what to make of this local convention that goes against the norm. {{R to required disambiguation}}? {{R to necessary disambiguation}}? {{R to disambiguation by convention}}? Would be interested in reading any discussions about this matter. – wbm1058 (talk) 20:43, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Apparently a hyperspecific naming convention requires the use of "(UK Parliament constituency)", so I think {{R from incorrect name}} is correct. I'm going to pose the question of the appropriate category on the naming convention talk page. voorts (talk/contributions) 21:29, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK Parliament constituencies). – wbm1058 (talk) 21:39, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've posed the question of the appropriate category on the talk page and pinged PamD, who drafted the guideline, to see if she knows the answer. voorts (talk/contributions) 21:43, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I just made this edit swapping out {{R from short name}} for {{R from less specific name}}. The reason I didn't retain {{R from short name}} is because it didn't seem to me that the title without its parenthetical qualifier should be considered a short name of the fully-qualified title, due to the following:
  • the actual title minus the qualifier is the same in both instances; and
  • this doesn't seem (to me) to be a case where the fully-qualified title would also be used generally to refer to the subject of the article itself[a] - (UK parliamentary constituency) is (in my mind) only a descriptor, not an extension of the article subject's name itself.

Thanks @A smart kitten. I think we had come to a consensus that that was the most appropriate option; I'm not sure why it wasn't implemented. voorts (talk/contributions) 22:53, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Notes

  1. ^ (unlike titles such as Tallahassee and Tallahassee, Florida; where one is more qualified than the other, and where both titles could be used generally even when no disambiguation is required)
