Predecessors?
editIt's pretty well documented that the VJ 101C was developed as the first flying example, by the consortium of Entwicklungsring Süd. This was a consortium between Heinkel, Messerschmitt and Bölkow, Heinkel having already produced a VJ 101A design and Messerschmitt a VJ 101B. The VJ 101A, with rotating nacelles (i.e. whole engine), was conceptually close to the design as built.
There had also been a Heinkel 231 design before this (it had no hope of going supersonic, as was a key requirement for the VJ 101). This was based on four fixed engines in the fuselage and vectoring exhaust nozzles.
Now, is there anything really solid to link the He231 design to Heinke's VJ 101A concept, and thus the VJ 101C? (as is claimed here, presumably based on http://www.robertcmason.com/textdocs/GermanVSTOLFighters.pdf). I see this as an error - Heinkel's VJ 101A concept was a clean sheet design. - An article in flight https://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1963/1963%20-%200775.html?search=VJ%20101 says it was a new design with a number of different combinations of lift and thrust engine looked at before they decided on the final configuration. No obvious connection with the He 231. MilborneOne (talk) 13:22, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
