Dora's Birthplace edit

It is usually stated that Dora was born in Honley, but I feel this is deceptive as many would assume that means the village of Honley. According to her birth certificate, she was born at the family's house on Shady Row, Meltham Mills. Whilst the bulk of Meltham Mills lay within the township of Meltham at that time, a portion (inc. Shady Row) was within the neighbouring township of Honley (due to the stream running through Meltham Mills being the boundary). As such, the 1891 Census return gives her place of birth as Honley (i.e. within the township of Honley, rather than in the village of Honley). Shortly after her birth, her father James Lindley Thewlis failed in an attempt to get himself elected onto the Honley Local Board. Shortly afterwards, every household on Shady Row signed a petition to Meltham Local Board requesting that the boundary line be redrawn so that the entirety of Meltham Mills would be within the township of Meltham. Despite paying their rates to Honley, the residents of Shady Row received their services (water, sewerage, gas, etc) from Meltham. Honley Local Board rejected the petition outright, so Meltham Local Board referred the issue to the West Riding County Council who then escalated it to the Boundary Commission. The latter ruled in favour of the petition in March 1896 and the Meltham boundary was subsequently extended to include the whole of Meltham Mills as well as parts of the Netherthong township. vandalism alert? edit

Victuallers Seems to be edits and re-edits introducing nonsense and obscenity into this article, tried to revert to uncorrupted version of May 2020 - is it a candidate for some form of ongoing protection as there are recurring edits requiring recurring reverts? Kaybeesquared (talk) 13:55, 15 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
