I think wiki needs to do more with this article. It is quite wrong to say the book was anti -American..although it was natural how it would be viewed on both sides of the Atlantic. The fact is it gives surely a remarkable view of the relatively primitive conditions people lived under while at the same time having a quiet sense of private prosperity --they get by.... coupled with a refreshing sense of a real democratic spirit . Even the slaves she meets dont seem too unhappy but of course life was relatively harsh for all. Far from being anti American it makes one realise the primitive nature of life in America through much of the nineteenth century and even how much more civilised England might have seemed despite the horrors of the slums in the cities This is a valuable and very informative book — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.98.113.13 (talk) 17:41, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
