Article re-write
editAs this article hadn't gotten much attention in recent years despite dokha becoming a popular trend in the UAE and other places, I took the liberty of expanding upon it as much as possible, adding as many relevant resources as I could. There is a lot to learn about this trend, it's origins and the whole health aspect, as a lot of young people in these parts of the world are still unaware of the health risks. I would appreciate anyone helping expand more as research continues.
Changes Made
- I moved the talk page to be within the scope of medicine and pharmacology, as that is where most of the conversation and research is focused, concerning dokha, right now.
- Expand article greatly, replacing many of the sources with more reliable ones. The previous version of the article had a lot of sources comprised of dokha retailers and anecdotal accounts, and was vague in a lot of its descriptions in the opening paragraphs.
- Add sections to give the article a bit more flow. A lot of the templates and formatting used are taken from other tobacco pages, as this is part of that series.
Thoughts
- Authoritative sources on dokha's history (ie. it's origins, cultivation, and production history in the earlier centuries of its use) are hard to come by, so that section is currently summarized using the only sources available. See below for a discussion on expanding that section.
- A lot the research of dokha is coming out of the UAE, and the UAE is the country most affected by dokha use, so there may be some bias there. Independent studies outside of the UAE would be welcomed.
I'll update this as more things come to me.
History section expansion
editThe history section could use some expansion, as the only sources I could find were from retailers talking about their version of how the product was cultivated and produced, which may or may not be reliable. Internet sources are hard to come by, so perhaps print media might have something to offer. Mosesintheflesh (talk) 16:18, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
The article currently claims that dokha originated in Iran in the 15th century. However, the primary ingredient is tobacco, which originates in the Americas, leaving less than eight years between discovery of the Americas and the creation of this modified tobacco product in the middle east. This is obviously unlikely. Catnapster (talk) 15:05, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
Tobacco didn't reach Asia until the 16th century, so unless dokha was previously made with something besides tobacco, which should then be explained in the history, it did not originate in Iran in the 15th century. Aguilarp (talk) 19:08, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
What strains of Tobacco are used?
editThis is a rather informative article, however; it doesn't talk about the types of tobacco plant that is used. I think this would add to the depth of understanding of the subject. Also, I think the article should go further in depth on its origins in Iran, for example; where was it first recorded, what it developed from and for, etc. The article should also address the curing methods of this tobacco. - It's tough to find authoritative sources on that sort of thing, but if you can find some, please feel free to add some more information. I've only been able to find websites from retailers and that sort of thing, which aren't really that authoritative on how dokha has been produced historically.
