Deletion edit

While the article has next to nothing in it now, it should not be deleted, just edited to incorpate the information of the series. With 3 games out now, a 4th game coming, and a Manga and anime series, I beleave it does deserve a page talking about the series as a whole. --Drkirby (talk) 14:16, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is already a disambiguation page for the series here, which could make this one look a little redundant. What topics do you think this article should cover that haven't already been covered in the existing individual game articles? Hewinsj (talk) 18:05, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge edit

The majority of the characters belong summed up in the main games. Laharl, Etna, Flonne, Prinnies, and Baal are really the only ones that need more than that. If necessary, the Earth guys, Mid Boss, and the the Prism Rangers can also be added. Is that it for the important recurring characters? I can't really remember any others. TTN (talk) 18:21, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

The prinnies are recognizable elements outside of the series, so I'm hesitant to say they should be merged. Given the cleanup rate on things though, one for now might be a good idea regardless.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 21:38, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree with the normal characters, but I don't think the Prinnies should be. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drkirby (talkcontribs) 19:39, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oppose - On the basis that this is the wrong place to merge the information. There is an article for the individual games, so if there was going to be a merge/redirect it should point there rather than to this stub. If the content of this article was just a list, you would only be creating a new list with an improper name. Hewinsj (talk) 18:05, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
The information isn't being directly merged. Only a few paragraphs of information on the characters that reappear in the other games will be placed in this article. Some will also be moved over to Disgaea, which lacks an actual character section. TTN (talk) 18:14, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I could get behind creating a character summary at the main article for the game, I just don't think a list of characters is the right place to start for this article. There is no substance to this page, and it hasn't shown what information could/should be displayed here that wouldn't just make it a repetition of information from the article(s) that already exist. Wouldn't it be better to give Disgaea (series) some structure before arbetrarially moving lists into it? Hewinsj (talk) 18:51, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Title edit

Why is this even labeled as "Disgaea series" La Pucelle came before Disgaea, and Marl Kingdom before that. If anything it should be called "Marl Kingdom Series" We don't call the Megaman series "Megaman 2 Series" just because it was more popular than the original, do we? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.243.126.208 (talk) 03:55, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Because, Disgaea: The Hour of Darkness is a cult game. Do see a La Pucelle Tactics or Marl Kingdom anime or manga in the states let alone probably Japan? No! That's because without Disgaea, Nippon Ichi games wouldn't be as popular! Ever wonder why there's a Street Fighter 2 Anime, but no never a Street Fighter 1 anime? It's because the franchise didn't become immensely popular until SF2! The same's with Disgaea. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.60.22.94 (talk) 16:21, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merging Prinny edit

The article is extremely bloated, and the actual relevant details are already covered within this article. The merchandise section would be a good base for adding other merchandise here. The reception section is very small, and the Penny Arcade reference needs to be removed anyway, which makes it even smaller. That can easily be contained here. TTN (talk) 19:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, the Prinny article seems to stand well on its own, with a good reception section and references. But if you think you can integrate the content well, then go ahead. The main article does need some out-of-universe content. I have to ask though, why does the Penny Arcade reference need to be removed? BlazerKnight (talk) 02:13, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Penny Arcade, while very popular and well known, is still a webcomic. There is no reason to actually use their comments in any article, especially with the amount of different topics they've covered over the years. Otherwise, they would be entitled to the same amount of weight in each article, despite the fact that they aren't always serious. TTN (talk) 15:44, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Webcomic or no, the author of the statement does have some credibility behind him as emphasized in the earlier discussion still on this page. It's not the webcomic itself that's being used as a source after all: if the same author had made the statement on, say, Gamasutra, the statement would still be a valid one would it not? You might bring the question up at WT:VG/S though, see what they feel on the matter.
I'm neutral about this, but I haven't done a proper search since you left last time. All in all though I do lean towards keeping it more than slamming it into a list, especially if someone can find more sources for reception.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 19:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'll go ahead and merge this for now. It can always be brought back if more information is found. TTN (talk) 18:59, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I did have a look for sources way back then, and TBH was less than impressed with the result. With a graphic and a description I think they're adequately covered in this article for now. Someoneanother 19:20, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Redirection? edit

I am rather uncomfortable with the recent replacement of content in List of Disgaea characters with a redirect. The rationale provided was "Each game already covers its specific characters, and the series article also has a section. This is redundant because of that." Are you sure that all the content in that list is present in the games' articles? I suggest instead that the list be maintained, and have it contain comprehensive character information. As for the games' articles: In the Characters section, a hatnote directing people to the list, and only describe main characters. And then, in the Plot section, provide piped links to the characters' listing when he/she/it is mentioned in the plot synopsis. BlazerKnight (talk) 02:28, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Depending upon how exhaustive it is, it's doubtful. Most pages just cover the primary protagonists and antagonists and maybe a few others.Jinnai 04:42, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I didn't understand that... What are you saying is doubtful? Which pages are you referring to? Excuse my denseness. BlazerKnight (talk) 09:42, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

One of the purposes of a character list is to cover information that cannot be placed into the main article(s). All of the Disgaea characters have very basic personalities that can be described in a few sentences, so all that leaves is plot. The plot in these games aren't really complicated at all, so they fit perfectly within the main articles. To also cover all that in a list is just redundant overall. TTN (talk) 15:44, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. The characters have backstories and complex personalities. Now that I've gotten around to looking at the old list, I think the redirect was unwarranted, as it documents the characters' appearances in various games and media, among other things. Granted, there is overlap with the Plot and Character sections of the games' articles, and the list was mostly unreferenced, but I think a revert is in order. We can try to trim it accordingly afterward, and that would be a better candidate for Prinny to be merged into. What do you think? BlazerKnight (talk) 00:58, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Uh, this is about as simple as you can get with a series. At times, the story doesn't even take itself seriously. What exactly does the section in the article and the main plot of the first game not cover about Laharl's personality? What purpose is there in completely repeating the first game's main storyline in another article? That is the only reason to have any actual content in such a list. Otherwise, it takes two sentences to describe his personality, which does not warrant splitting it out of the main articles. TTN (talk) 01:12, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Again, I disagree. The story and characters do have depth, while being outwardly humourous. Regarding Laharl: His appearance, the fact that he is disgusted at the concept of love because of his mother's sacrifice, and the difference in his portrayals in other media, to name a few. And that's just for one character. Please reconsider. BlazerKnight (talk) 02:09, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
While depth is subjective in most cases, nobody is going to be writing thesis papers on this subject. As I have said, that is the purpose of the plot section of the first game. Character articles and sections are meant to give a basic overview. If readers want the whole thing, they then look at the main article's plot section. As for other appearances, that is the purpose of the section in this article. With the exception of the anime, which can cover that version of the character (pointing out differences is generally original research anyways), he is no different in any other game besides minor fourth wall breaking humor that does not need to be mentioned. TTN (talk) 02:31, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
First, the main protagonists: Laharl, Etna and Flonne are in multiple games. That alone would need to be mentioned. Furthermore, Etna and Laharl especially do have character development (not so as much for Flonne). Character development is relevant to note. They aren't especially deep characters, but they aren't flat either (well except at the beginning). For La Pucelle, that game has even more depth than Disgaea. And then there are several games in the series I haven't even played. Saying they are all flat is just as wrong as saying they are all deeply complex characters with hundreds of layers.
BlazerKnight, I was talking about the character sections in pages. Jinnai 02:39, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Upon re-examination, I can see that the list does duplicate a lot of info in other articles. Perhaps it would be better to get the bits that aren't already covered and merge them into the relevant articles? BlazerKnight (talk) 03:20, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're absolutely free to merge in anything that you feel to be missing. Anything that deals with multiple appearances should go in this article. TTN (talk) 16:08, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

External Links edit

For the series as a whole, shouldn't we maybe add external links to Disgaea's main website and perhaps a few of the best fan sites? Just a thought for those who like the series. RPGfanatic (talk) 13:18, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

The main website is appropriate, but fansites are not.Jinnai 05:26, 19 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
