Statue attacked by a Spitfire? edit

I was in Koblenz in 1979 and remember a local telling me that the statue had been strafed by an English aircraft -- to my memory a Spitfire -- in retribution for the Blitz. Googling whiffed on me, but I have no reason to doubt the guy. The story made quite an impression on my young mind. Does anybody know anything more? Spitfires did not attack statues, they attacked farmers and civilians in the open field.

There's something very odd about the cablecar photograph. The first thing I noticed was that one of the cabins appeared to be in front of a cable it should be behind, and more careful inspection shows that there are repeated "breaks" in the cable and also that it's far too heavy when compared with other photos.

I think it would befit a city of the status of Koblenz not to be represented by a suspect image. MarkMLl (talk) 21:49, 2 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Account of destruction in 1945 edit

There was no such thing as the 87th Artillery, Sgt. Watson was in the 87th Infantry (http://memory.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/bib/80142) and could not have led an artillery unit. The edit history suggests this account is from Sgt. Watson's own recollections but no source is given.

Add topic
