Swimming Pool and Riverside

I seem to recall that the playhouse (before moving to the now closed site) used to perform in a swimming baths (poss queen st) do I have this completely wrong? Also does anyone know of any references to the original plans to build a theatre along the side of the trent (where the court house is) Mdpaling 15:24, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

This article needs major work

This article requires a major clean-up and rewrite. I've just removed a chunk of copyvio pasted into the lede, but I suspect there are more instances of this. The article is very disorganized and confusing, with various bits added piecemeal but with no coherent framework or "narrative". There are out-of-date plugs for old productions, and vast swathes of completely unreferenced material, much it written in an unencyclopedic style.

It's also very unclear who currently operates what and how. See for example:

I agree that the article is unstructured and confusing. This is tied up with the apparently confusing status of the organisation. Derby Playhouse Ltd. (DPL) is a limited company and registered charity that originally owned (the lease to) the theatre building. DPL still exists as a company and as such owns the IP of the Derby Playhouse name, web domains etc. The lease to the building was sold to the University of Derby (UoD) in 2009. DPL would not allow UoD to use the name 'Derby Playhouse' so the building was renamed 'Derby Theatre'. From 2009 until April 2012 the public-facing operation of the building was managed by Derby Live which is the name of the arts provision of Derby City Council. In April 2012 UoD took over the management of the building and its operations. This is done under the 'Derby Theatre' brand which is a subsidiary company of UoD.

Clearly, the confusion is caused by the theatre building sharing its name with two different organisations at different times in its history. I believe there is a good argument for more than one article.

'Derby Playhouse Ltd' would cover the history and current activity of the company.

'Derby Theatre' would be about the UoD company.

The history of the building could be incorporated into the two articles.

There should be two separate articles, 1) Derby Playhouse, which is the history of theatre company up to the present day, with reference to the commissioning, designing and building of the new theatre in 1975, which used its name up until April 2009 when it sold to the University of Derby and renamed Derby Theatre, with a link to article 2, Derby Theatre, which details its own history from April 2009 onwards. Wikipedia Editors have suggested something along these lines.

'Derby Playhouse is a British theatre production company. It was also the name of the building now known as the Derby Theatre from 1975 until 2009. Derby Playhouse commissioned, raised the funds and built the theatre. It owned the lease on and mounted original productions there from its opening in 1975 until 2008. When the lease on the building was sold to the University of Derby in 2009, the building was renamed.'

I think we should avoid the term Derby Playhouse Ltd as the theatre company has always been known as simply Derby Playhouse, like Nottingham Playhouse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerrad7042006! (talk • contribs) 09:44, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Recent edits

We've had a series of edits today from someone obviously connected with this theatre. The end result was a complete mess. They pasted this entire article into Derby Playhouse (previously a redirect) and left all the material here as well. They then removed all the maintenance tags from this article without fixing any of its many problems. Given the issues discussed above, it probably is sensible to have separate articles for the pre- and post-2008 theatre, especially since from 1975 until 2008, Derby Playhouse was also a production company. What I've done is remove virtually all the redundant material from this article and bring it up to date. I've tagged the newly created Derby Playhouse for multiple issues and slightly clarified its lede. Voceditenore (talk) 15:42, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
