1557

Afaict, this number appears to be made up. It's unsourced here and the sources at Hohhot are entirely non-WP:RS tourist websites. Similarly, websites mentioning it are either cribbing Wikipedia, other tourist websites, or slapdash publications like China Daily. Actual scholars seem to date the temple to the 1570s, after the Dalai Lama specifically requested its construction in Hohhot. This source suggests a reason for the screwup: Altan Khan getting workers and constructing an earlier temple at Meidai. Even then, the city was constructed in 1557 and the temple's hall much later, also in the 1570s. Note also that many sources date Hohhot's own establishment as 1572 but that appears to be based on misreading Altan Khan's history. See the same source for how Meidai's settlement's previous name being Hohhot may have prompted most of this confusion. Note that our own "History" section here begins in the late 1570s.

If this is just an artifact of poor English sourcing, that's fine: provide the Chinese or Mongolian sources for the date. They should be reliable sources, though, not just tourism websites or poorly edited / fact-checked Chinese newspapers. — LlywelynII 15:14, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
