The wife of David Jones edit

The wife of David Jones[edit source] Many sources give the birth name of Mrs David Jones as Jane Hall Mander, daughter of John Hall Mander.

The origin of this second or middle name for both father and daughter appears to derive from an paper given to the Royal Historical Society in 1955, by Sir Charles Lloyd Jones, David Jones's grandson. (Jones. C. Lloyd ‘The History of David Jones Limited’, Journal and Proceedings (Royal Australian Historical Society), vol 41, part 5, 1955, pp 226-39.)

In documentation applying directly to the marriage of John Mander to his wife Susannah Bellamy, the will of John Mander of East Smithfield, the baptism of Jane Mander, and the death of Mrs Jane Jones in Sydney in 1873, there is no reference to the name Hall.

Mrs Jane Jones's death and funeral notices in the NSW newspapers simply give her name as 'Mrs David Jones' or 'Mrs Jane Jones, relict of the late Mr. David Jones' or 'Mrs David Jones, widow of a very recently deceased and highly respected colonist.'[1][2][3]

The name Hall, used by David and Jane Jones for their son, George Hall Jones, may derive from family name of Joseph Hall, brother-in-law of Jane Mander.[4]
