Talk:David Fairbairn (politician)

Canadian connection edit

Do we know how he came to be born in Canada? We really ought to flesh that out. -- JackofOz (talk) 12:31, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good question JackofOz. One should actually question most of the 'facts' in this entry Ningnong2 (talk) 09:23, 7 July 2010 (UTC)ningnong2Reply

Hear, Hear! When David Fairbairn was a one-year-old his parents, then in England, took him, with his 4 year old brother George, on the 'Mauretania' between England and New York. The Purser's record of the passengers, a copy of which I have before me as I write, shows David to have been born in England and to be of English extraction. In 1938 David, then a 21-yr old student, travelled between Liverpool and New York on the 'Carinthia', accompanied by his mother and sister. On this voyage the Purser listed David's birthplace as Claygate, England. [That list also sighted today.] Wikipedia shows Claygate to be near Esher, Surrey. Thus it would be correct ro refer to Surrey, England, as his birthplace. The Wikipedia article on David did so at first, until “Vancouver’ crept in as an edit in Jan 2009. If I may direct attention to Note 1 below the article, which records the proposer of a Condolence motion in the Federal Parliament of Australia, Canberra, following David's death, as noting that David was born in Surrey, England. It is a given that when a formal motion is proposed in Parliament by the Acting Prime Minister, he is armed with the best information available. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.217.209.177 (talk) 10:37, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that excellent info. I've corrected his place of birth accordingly. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:30, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
