The draft article DIN 7876 is intended to be the first in a series of Wikipedia articles about national and international standards relating to basic underwater diving equipment, namely swimming fins, diving masks and breathing tubes (snorkels).

Five national and international standards relating to swimming fins are known to exist:

  • US military standard: MIL-S-82258:1965.
  • USSR/CIS standard: GOST 22469:1977 (Active).
  • German standard: DIN 7876:1980.
  • Malaysian Standards: MS 974:1985; MS 974:2002 (Active).
  • European Standard: EN 16804:2015 (Active).

The specifications in these standards were developed to ensure that compliant swimming fins meet basic safety, quality and fitness for purpose requirements. Their evolution over several decades and across several countries not only reveals interesting historical and geographical similarities and differences but also provides "hard" data in the form of reliable methods of testing quality parameters to complement the "soft" subjective guidance and experience found elsewhere.

Immediate future article-writing priority in the case of swimming fin standards will be given to the active specifications GOST 22469:1977 and EN 16804:2015. Plans are afoot to proceed then to corresponding diving mask and snorkel standards. Helmardine (talk) 07:33, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

A useful addition to our coverage of diving equipment. Let me know if you need help integrating them into the encyclopaedia (navboxes, categories etc). · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 06:02, 23 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
