Corruption

How about including the following paragraph?

Political analyst Andrei Piontkovsky considers current political system in Russia as "the highest and culminating stage of bandit capitalism” . He believes that "Russia is not corrupt. Corruption is what happens in all countries when businessmen offer officials large bribes for favors. Today’s Russia is unique. The businessmen, the politicians, and the bureaucrats are the same people. They have privatized the country’s wealth and taken control of its financial flows." Such views are also shared by former CIA director James Woolsey who said: "I have been particularly concerned for some years, beginning during my tenure, with the interpenetration of Russian organized crime, Russian intelligence and law enforcement, and Russian business. I have often illustrated this point with the following hypothetical: If you should chance to strike up a conversation with an articulate, English-speaking Russian in, say, the restaurant of one of the luxury hotels along Lake Geneva, and he is wearing a $3,000 suit and a pair of Gucci loafers, and he tells you that he is an executive of a Russian trading company and wants to talk to you about a joint venture, then there are four possibilities. He may be what he says he is. He may be a Russian intelligence officer working under commercial cover. He may be part of a Russian organized crime group. But the really interesting possibility is that he may be all three and that none of those three institutions have any problem with the arrangement."

Ranking

The Nationmasters ranking (that says Russia is 5th) is inaccurate to go by. They only rank about 60 countries, missing many of the highest ranking ones. If you check the List of countries by homicide rate list, Russia is 13th. Also regarding the 16.5 homicide figure, it's easy to calculate using the homicide number + population in 2006 (142,300,000) using this calculator. Krawndawg (talk) 11:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

The RIA Novosti reference does not support the claim that Russia's homicide rate is 13th highest in the world. The article List of countries by homicide rate uses this reference to support this statistics. So I think the other article has problem. Hence I removed this statistics as it is not supported by any reference.

• The RIA Novosti reference document what officials said in news conference. Andrei Kucheryavy told "The number of killings has been gradually declining in the past four years, while the number of solved murders is increasing". I think you misunderstand. There is no article that says where Russia is ranked in the world. The current source, NationMaster, ranks Russia 5th out of only 60 countries that it lists. It's missing many countries, meaning Russia isn't actually ranked 5th. The List of countries by homicide rate article ranks every country based on individual sources, including those that NationMaster doesn't list. Krawndawg (talk) 11:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

update

I definitely think this article warrants an update template at the top. Almost all of the information is at minimum 5 years old, a huge portion is even from the 90s. There is almost no information after 2003. This article doesn't give a good picture of what crime is like in current day Russia at all. Krawndawg (talk) 01:25, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Crime Statistics?

One of those crime statistics is certainly wrong, it states that Columbia has 49.60 cases of car theft per thousand people, and yet the total crime rate is only 4.98. Upon checking the source I found the real figure is a much more realistic figure below one. Could somebody please change this since I have no idea how.

I'm just going to remove the entire table. You can compare murder rates from country to country but overall crime rates are recorded differently all around the world. The editors should maybe consider creating specific entries for specific subjects, such as crime in the Soviet Union, corruption in Russia and illegal drug trade in Russia. ADM (talk) 03:40, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Constant comparison with United States?

Why the constant comparison to the crime rate of the United States? It seems Russia's stats are compared with America's more so than with any other country in this article e.g.:

• Each of the first three paragraphs under 'Murder' draws a direct comparison
• The first sentence under 'Statistics' declares: "homicide victimization rates in Russia is different compared to that of the United States"
• The text above the 'international comparison' table exclusively compares with the U.S.
• The 'historical trends' section states: "robberies, homicide and other violent crimes were less prevalent in the Soviet Union than in the United States"

Wikipedia is a global website, and whilst the English language version is frequented by Americans more than any other nationality, it's unhelpful to make these sorts of articles so US-centric (or Western-centric).
