Largest town? Castlebar or Ballina?

According to the last census in 2002, Castlebar has the largest population. However, this is quite different from being the largest town, even more so when the two largest towns are so close in size.

In saying this, the area of the Castlebar Urban District Council could probably be larger then that of Ballina UDC – does any have this data?

Corrib gas controversy

Mayo hass the lowest crime rate of any Garda district, yet has the highest rate of complaints against Gardaí. But there's not even a mention of the Corrib gas controversy that generates the police violence that causes these complaints, that has seen scores arrested and many hospitalised, in this article. This situation, of a community so fiercely fighting both its government and corporate power, is unique in Ireland; one would have to travel to Britain to find a comparable situation. It's often in the national news, and at times seems to dominate reporting in the Mayo papers. Not a word here, though. Is this an oversight?

I've tried to tone down the pov - obviously the campaigners make a point of complaining about the police - it's part of the campaign. So the stats may or may not reflect "violent" policing. Also, I doubt whether this should feature in the "County Mayo" article - current events are not normally a part of the county articles. Sarah777 (talk) 21:17, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

You removed one sentence, claiming this "tones down the pov". The sentence you removed didn't say the policing was violent (as you then insinuate), all it did was remark on the strange situation where the county with the lowest crime level has the highest rate of complaints about police. I don't understand why you feel complaining about police tactics would be an "obviously" automatic part of a campaign (I can think of many campaigns where people have had no problems with the police); it's practically the only legal avenue available to victims of police illegality, a feature of the government response to this particular campaign. The campaign against the current configuration of the Corrib gas project has been going on for nine years, and has regularly been in the news for the last four; hardly just a current event. I can't see any major "puzzle" re crime rate when a sparsely populated county is hosting a major political protest for several years. It seems a "non-point" to me. And as the events are on-going and have their own article it isn't necessary to include the text in the County article. Nonetheless I put it back minus the "strangeness" claim. I didn't say that it was "strange", although it is. I didn't give the situation any adjective, I let the facts speak for themselves. It's a pretty unusual situation, and I'm not convinced it should be left unmentioned. One would have to do a fair trawl through other articles to find the crime/complaints dichotomy that is so peculiar to Mayo. As for the violence, here's some examples: More 4 documentary, RTÉ footage, RTÉ, RTÉ and Youtube. TG4 showed even worse examples, but I've yet to figure out how to access their reports. Even if the violence is well referenced the main article is there for the details; a reference to it is enough in the county article surely? I'd agree that heavy handed policing (to be euphemistic) is fairly well verified. Sarah777 (talk) 00:18, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't think the individual podcasts need to be listed; it reads as an advertisment to me, and not really in keeping with the Encyclopedic nature of WP. I propose they be removed. Adding variant Name in Irish?

We always called it "Muigh Eo" growing up in the 90s in Ballina. Irish wikipedia gives variants https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maigh_Eo - is it ok to add it to this one?
