Post 1974 edit

@Stortford: In terms of you changing this to only be pre 1974 this district like Blaby Rural District, Fareham Urban District (and Municipal Borough of Harrow in 1965) was reconstituted with exactly the same boundaries in 1974 as opposed to County Borough of Warrington that was abalgated in 1974 with other districts to form the Borough of Warrington which is why the scope is as such. Yes I know that the likes of Skegness Urban District may have continued as a parish with the same boundaries but a district is quite different to a parish compared with one type of district v another type. Per WP:UKDISTRICTS#Reconstituted districts which I added as unopposed and reflecting consensus/practice over the years and per the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography/Archive/WikiProject UK subdivisions#Splits where borough is smaller than urban area in 2006 where it was asked about what the scope of the Ipswich (borough) article should be as the boundaries didn't change in 1974. Now we have the reverse with an article that ends rather than starts coverage in 1974. Yes the CB and NMD are legally different entities but it was a geographical continuation, look at Category:Districts abolished by the London Government Act 1963 you can see the only one that is a redirect is Harrow because while the legal entity (MB) was abolished it was a geographical continuation. In terms of the questions Morwen asked about Reading's scope I can answer them, what should the scope of Reading (district) be? The district from 1835 rather than 1974 or 1998, where should links point from the likes of County borough? County Borough of Reading as such redirects exist (which would go to the district now town) but before such redirects exist it would go to Reading (borough) not Reading, Berkshire. The same points can apply to Ipswich.

In terms of what we should do:

Option 1, move this to Borough of Ipswich and rescope and see what happens

Option 2, just redirect to Ipswich given Ipswich Borough Council exists and update WP:UKDISTRICTS. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:27, 1 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

My reason for rescoping it was that you had redirected Borough of Ipswich to point here, so anyone following links from all the modern places linked to Borough of Ipswich found themselves here on an article using a title for the area that was abolished in 1974, even if its boundaries didn't change that year. With the other examples you give like Blaby, Fareham and Harrow, the old district name is a redirect to the modern district name, not the other way around. However, I'd not want to create a Borough of Ipswich article given the very strong similarity between the built-up area and the modern borough. Therefore I redirected Borough of Ipswich back to Ipswich as it had previously been, and trimmed the bits of this article which mentioned (almost as a footnote) that the same area became the modern borough. However, I'd be quite happy to go the extra step and follow your Option 2 and just redirect this page to Ipswich, same as County Borough of Reading redirects to Reading. I'd then put an extra paragraph at Ipswich for the town's administrative history, which can then cover the evolution from ancient borough to municipal borough, county borough and non-metropolitan borough in one place. That's probably more useful as it lets the administrative history be read in the context of the town's wider history. Ipswich Borough Council already exists for the modern administration of the place. Thanks Stortford (talk) 06:23, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
