I own property less than 1 mile from the Copus monument and have heard the local legend regarding this site; although the accounts in this 1880 article are true, they are only one side of the story.

The Native Americans had been systematically rounded up and removed from their own lands, and this skirmish between the whites and Native Americans was typical of the conflicts inevitable when two so-different cultures collide. An attempt should be made to tell this story in a way unbiased and inoffensive to all people rather than calling these people "savages": "Swiftly, silently, stealthily, as a cat creeps upon its prey they closed in upon the doomed cabin and before the soldiers were aware of their presence, were between them and their guns; then came the horrid war-whoop as a score or more of painted warriors rushed upon them with tomahawk and scalping-knife." This is fear-mongering, and is a great injustice to these Native Americans who were defending their lands and their way of life from the systematic extermination caused by the European Americans, who regarded them as animals. That bigoted attitude should no longer be preserved in the Wikipedia.

The way I heard the story, several hundred native americans had been slaughtered by the whites; whether in retaliation for Copus or whether Copus was retaliation for those killings is undocumented because unfortunately white history does not treat these "savages" with the same care as those of European ancestry. Even the monument's physical characteristics symbolize the superiority of the Whites. It is white stone, and like the Washington Monument in shape; this stone phallic symbol stands as an offront to the culture the European Americans destroyed when settling the United States.

I suspect that many of the killings of native Americans happened on what is now my land, and I hope that their side of this story can one day be told. Please add my anecdote as a dissention to this article in the hopes that someone will eventually have a more complete version of this story to post here.

History section addition project feedback

This project is about researching local Ohio history (Charles Mill is extremely close to me) and offering unbiased perspective on the Copus through research and hopefully collaboration and feedback with others. My final revision is due October 13, 2014.

Since this is local history, I don't actually have any internet sources yet, but plan to visit the local libraries and historical societies to see if I can find out more on the subject.
