Connolly Leather in Spitfires edit
This is very misleading as service Spitfires did not have seats as such. The pilot sat on a parachute which was supported by a metal seat pan and thus there was no seat in the conventional sense. There's a persistent urban legend that the other contributing factor to Connolly's failure was the mad cow disease scare of the late 1990s - supposedly Connolly's specially-pampered herd of cattle had to be destroyed, at great cost. - BSE isn't foot & mouth. "Whole herds" weren't slaughtered owing to contagion. If cows were killed due to it, it was on an individual basis.
- Yes, some cows were killed. If the epidemiology of BSE is to be believed, it's likely that there was some clustering, and that this was co-located with herds that had been fed at the cheaper end of things. Which doesn't sound much like a "pampered" herd. What didn't happen though was the foot & mouth regional slaughter, of anything and everything nearby.
