Na Dálaigh

edit

Pretty sure the use of this Irish language name is incorrect. Traditionally, "Na Dálaigh" refers to the aristocratic branches of the O'Donnell clan of Tyrconnell, in reference to their ancestor, Dálach, grandfather of the Domhnall from whom their surname derives. The family discussed in this article are of the rival Cenél nEógain tribal grouping, only extremely remotely related to the Tyrconnell O'Donnells. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JackMason1 (talkcontribs) 01:26, 3 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sources

edit

This article offers The Ulster Clans (O'Mullan, O'Kane and O'Mellan; 1966) and The Book of Ulster surnames (Bell; 1988) as its sources.

The Ulster Clans (1966) is accessible via Google Books. At least in snippet/preview mode. A search for the subject (the surname "Domnaill") returns zero results. Nothing. Searches for variants and related terms (Domhnaill or Dálaigh) also return absolutely nothing at all. By contrast, a search for other Ulster clan/family names (like O'Neill and variants or Mullan and variants) returns dozens of results. Unless I am missing something, I do not understand how this work supports the text.

The Book of Ulster Surnames (1988) is accessible via the Internat Archive. In its entirety. A search for the subject (the surname "Domnaill") returns zero results. Nothing. At all. Not one single mention. By contrast, a search for other Ulster clan/family names (like O'Neill and variants) returns dozens of results. Unless I am missing something, I do not understand how this work supports the text either.

If this article is about a sept of the McDonnell or MacDonnell families, I do not know why this content couldn't be covered there. If this article is about a discrete family line, that is descended from Domhnaill mac Áed Findliath, then it needs to be supported by better sources. As NONE of the sources offered mention Domnaill (or Domhnaill) mac Áed Findliath, "Clan Domnaill", or otherwise seem to support any of the text here. The following discussion is closed and will soon be archived: outcome: merge/redirect completed

As above, I can find no sources which establish any notability for this subject. As far as I can tell the only sources offered in the article do not even mention the subject. Unless there are other thoughts (deletion? improvement?), or some sources which can firmly establish notability for this subject as a standalone topic, I propose to merge/redirect this title to Branches of the Cenél nEógain#Clann Domnaill.   Resolved It's been several weeks. I haven't heard any other thoughts. So have gone ahead with the redirect. (As above, the linked sources do not seem to support the text. Not to mind establishing sufficient notability to warrant a standalone article. And so I've redirected to an article which seems to discuss the same topic with more depth/detail/context.)
