James Dean

I am Tom Rogers' son. My father took great pride in his work at Leo Burnett and Nurmi's fantastical tale about James Dean being the true creator of Charlie the Tuna is quite offensive. Both Star-Kist and Leo Burnett have given full credit to Rogers for creating the character and I will heavily edit this section unless someone can persuade me to leave it alone.Rogersvb 13:58, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Well first off as Tom Rogers son it would be a little unethical for you to edit something so close to you. Also, although the james dean part of the entry only has one citation, and a geocites one at that, there seem to be enough mentions/citable places if you do a quick google that it SHOULD be included as the RUMOR it is reported to be. Also, the entry does give the real credit where credit is due. There is no point in editing this entry. It is about Charlie the Tuna, which includes a rumor about Dean, it is clear that it is a rumor, and creative credit is given to the real creators. This entry is about Charlie, not james dean, and not about your father. But since you said all this last year maybe its a moot point. Dirk Pitt 13:26, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Dirk, my comments referred to the page before it was clarified (by someone else) that the James Dean claim was an interesting rumor and properly gave TR full credit. So, yes, much of your riposte is mooted. I'm not so sure I agree that it is "unethical" for someone to edit a topic that is "close" to them (otherwise we risk disqualifying many firsthand sources), but I acknowledge that there is a potential conflict and I'm glad that the attribution material was added by another editor. Though I agree in principle with what you are saying, "firsthand sources" fall under "original research" and are thus not valid sources under wikipedia policy. StarKist

While Charlie the Tuna was a famous advertising mascot, the comany itself is also notable. Is there a reason why we don't have an article about it?   Will Beback  talk  07:15, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

• We did have an article. I wrote it, or at least part of it, but now it is not there... I am not sure who or how it was deleted as there is no official record of its creation here. But, yes, there should be a separate article. Stevenmitchell (talk) 18:24, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

What about the other fish?

As I recall, many of the StarKist commercials in the seventies featured a smaller fish who tried to talk sense to Charlie. When Charlie would announce his latest scheme, the smaller fish would say, "But Charlie! StarKist don't want tunas with good taste; StarKist wants tunas that taste good!" Charlie the Tuna → StarKist Tuna – We have a page for a mascot, but not the actual company? I say we move this page to StarKist Tuna, which can then easily have its own subsection on Charlie. Sorry, Charlie. Jgera5 (talk) 18:27, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
