Jeremiah Harman, significant banker, dies 1844, leaving the family bank to Edward and Henry Harman. Not clear if these are sons, nephews, brothers, or other relatives. Gentlemen's Magazine obit doesn't mention wife or children. [4]
There's an 1849 financial analysis, The Commercial Crisis, 1847-1848: Being Facts and Figures Illustrative of the Events of that Important Period Considered in Relation to the Three Epochs of the Railway Mania, the Food and Money Panic and the French Revolution. by David Morier Evans, published by Letts, Son and Steer. It refers to "the partners' father, Mr John Harman", implying that Jeremiah, Edward, and Henry were brothers. (p49)
Does this connect to Walter John Harman, born 1829 near London? The only source I have for him is a scrappy family history, The Harmans of Highgate. His mother Elizabeth died c. 1837 and his father Edward died c. 1846, registered at death as "quality gentleman" and a banker. WJM took on the head of family role, e.g. arranging the education of two (younger?) brothers. WJM married Hannah Bellamy (of Bellamy's Wharf) in 1858 and they had 12 children. Only four married, including Nathaniel Bishop (1869-1945), opthalmologist and father of the Labour politician Harriet. (Professional obit of NBH at Royal College of Surgeons page.) WJM was a charming jewellery seller by day, but a hard-line Baptist disciplinarian at home in Highgate. He was the son of Edward Harman (1782-1846) and Elizabeth Bishop (1783-1837). It is to be assumed that the elder Edward "crashed", leaving WJH to try to regain the status and style of living he'd lost.
There is a brother to WJH, given as Edward, no middle name, born 1822, no info given for marriage or death. Could this be the vicar above? A five-year birth date discrepancy occurs. Lots of family trees at Frederick Harman. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 17:34, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
