How on earth can someone have invented the imaginary number i in the 19th century, several hundred years after all the fundamental work on complex numbers was done?

I don't speak French and am not qualified to edit this entry, but this is a ridiculous claim. Someone who speaks French and can evaluate the cited work should fix it. Please!
