His mother is English not Irish. Question: I may be wrong, but is it possible she's ethnically Irish and rather nationally English? Or the other way around? If so, perhaps just some clarification is needed.

I wouldn't even be confident describing her as English with some Irish ancestry.Her surname's not Irish, but it can be English, so there's more evidence pointing towards her being English and having English ancestry.
