Father of margarine?

If the first American margarine factory opened the year before he was born, how is Carleton Ellis the father of margarine? Yes, he developed modern vegetable based oil hydrogenation and all the modern forms of margarine. But is "forgotten father of margarine" really NPOV enough?

I have just written an article that ranks prolific inventors based on number of US patents. Carleton Ellis would be no. 9 on this list if the 753 patents listed here are all US patents. However, the article is not clear that they are 753 US patents. If 753 is the sum of all patents filed internationally, then it is not a comparable number, as the same invention would be counted many times. As all of his patents predate 1976, a USPTO search doesn't retrieve any. Does anyone know the number of US patents (and have a link to such info?) Thanks in advance...
