No disambiguation?

edit

I changed this page to a disambiguation page because I was unexpectedly redirected to Carie, Missouri when I was looking for information about tooth decay, but that change was reverted. I think that Carie, Missouri isn't notable enough to be the primary topic referred to by the word 'carie', and I think people looking for information about dental caries should be able to reach it from this page. If not a disambiguation, what's the right way to do this?

How about 'Carie' redirects to 'Tooth decay', with a redirect hatnote pointing to 'Carie, Missouri'? For now I've put a hatnote on 'Carie, Missouri' pointing the other way. HyRotor (talk) 17:08, 6 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

As the original creator of the redirect, I think that with dental caries, Carie, Missouri, and Carie Graves, there are a sufficient amount of topics for disambiguation. AllTheUsernamesAreInUse (talk) 17:58, 6 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'd agree it should be a DAB, no Google results are for the place, nearly all appear to be for the teeth meaning. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:47, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I disagree that this dab page should exist. As for tooth decay, it's caries, which IMO has no "genuine risk of confusion or misspelling" (MOS:DABMISSPELL) - I admit the pronunciation of de:Karies in my mothertongue might be a distorting factor in this. The actor isn't known as "Carie" and shouldn't be listed per WP:PARTIAL. The documentary isn't mentioned in Apuan Alps, so that shouldn't be listed either. That leaves only the geographical place as the only real topic. Now, if the caries situation was given weight, there should still not be a dab page per WP:ONEOTHER - you can leave a hatnote to Caries in Carie, Missouri. – sgeureka tc 21:16, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Well OP did say that they typed "carie" in while looking for "caries" so there does seem to be some risk of confusion. The actor may not be known as just Carie but given name lists are acceptable on DAB pages. The documentary could be removed. AllTheUsernamesAreInUse (talk) 01:21, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see! I didn't realize that 'caries' was a noncount noun; I thought it was a synonym for 'cavities'. I doubt I'm the first person to have made that mistake, though. Now I see why 'Carie' shouldn't redirect to 'Tooth decay', but I do think the confusion may be common enough to warrant a hatnote or DAB.
I included the documentary because it's mentioned and linked in the article on the No Cav movement. If that's not enough evidence of notability, and if we're also excluding Carie Graves, then I agree that your solution (a hatnote to Caries in Carie, Missouri) is the best one. I've linked to the Film and TV Section of No Cav. Per WP:DABMENTION I think it can stay. AllTheUsernamesAreInUse (talk) 18:25, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think the current version addresses all concerns and can IMO stay that way as well now. – sgeureka tc 09:42, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
