I'm curious as to why it's spelled "Capitol", which is an American spelling not used in Canada, and even in the US "Capitol" is used to refer to the Lesgiative Buildings, whereas they still use "Capital" for the city itself. I know, it's odd, but "capitol" is correct, as this photo of the old marquee shows. Notwithstanding that Ottawa was a capital city, "capitol" was a common name for theatres back in that era (a Google search of capitol + theatre will give results pertaining to dozens of cinemas named "Capitol" across North America). There are, for example, a number of Capitol theatres in the United States on that country's National Register of Historic Places. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:33, 9 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Capitol Theatre, Ottawa built by Thomas Cameron Bate and Partner McMahon edit

The Capitol Theatre, Ottawa, built in 1920 by the 'Bate-McMahon Co.' co-founded by Thomas Cameron Bate. This is a prime example of the many Buildings built by the Ottawa BATE family.

Nor sure why this term was used. Anyone growing up in Ottawa knows it as the Capital Theatre. it was more than a movie venue and had an actual theatre stage. 2607:FEA8:E29D:6000:D018:5882:288:B12A (talk) 10:44, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
