notes

I was struck by the recent selling price - 120 million pounds, for the festival, and it took me back to the early years when the festival almost collapsed. It was poorly attended, and the original concept- swapping the location between Cannes and Venice was proving difficult because of the cost. The festival was strictly designed to promote cinema advertising.

As head of the British Delegation to the Festival I proposed radical changes to the jury system, the introduction of more tv commercial, (rather than cinema) awards, the short list schedule and the final Awards night stage presentation. (Which I had to produced, and compere) By the third year of these changes, confidence returned, and the festival wins took on additional value and entries and personnel attendance grew from strength to strength.

Jean Mineur owned a major piece of the project, and the other industry giant - the partners of the Screen Advertising World Association began to loose their fear of the television medium.
