"the next election" ?

"the next election" sounds a bit vague, and will be a meaningless title once it has happened.

Since the election must he held between now, and 3 years and 3 months, or whatever, after the previous one, then it will be held during 2016, no ? The 2016 Australian Federal Election would be a more meaningful and permanent title. Also, a very short preamble explaining that the timing of Australian Federal Elections is not fixed far in advance, but is at the Prime Minister's discretion, would be useful for the benefit of foreigners.Lathamibird (talk) 02:42, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

It's extremely unlikely to non-existent that the election would be held in the first half of January 2017, but dates do indeed technically allow for one. Turnbull has indeed said the election will be in 2016 but unfortunately that's not sufficient to change from 'next federal election' to 'federal election, xxxx'. Plenty of precedent. Retirement

There is a list of parliamentarians who are supposedly "retiring". This is imprecise and not really correct. Some of these people may actually resign from their position before the parliamentary cycle ends. Others will continue to be MP's until the parliament is dissolved, or whatever specific event causes MP's to no longer be members.

When they say they are retiring, this really means that they "do not intend to nominate as candidates for re-election". These media statements are probably not binding, they have been known to change their mind. And some of them announce "retirement", when it becomes apparent that their party is not going to re-endorse them for re-election, by whatever process they follow. To call that "retirement" is a polite euphemism. Is an MP who runs for re-election, and loses, "retired" ? Technically, you could say that all sitting MP's "retire" at every election they face.Lathamibird (talk) 02:55, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

All we know is what members say publicly. These people have all said they do not intend to stand again. The reason for their decision is irrelevant. Whether it was entirely their own decision or whether it was made for them by their party, is also irrelevant. Yes, they still have the option of resigning any time they like rather than waiting for the dissolution of parliament, and if any of them do take that option, we'll change the list accordingly at that time. Yes, they still have the option of changing their minds and re-nominating after all. Madigan and Hendy

I can't find any reference confirming that the Liberal preselection for Eden-Monaro has taken place, but it will probably be Hendy unopposed. Madigan should be in the table as his website confirms that he is running for his new party. --Canley (talk) 11:18, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

Double dissolution

I think we have a bit of a problem with the Senate lists until the election is called, considering that this page is assuming it's a regular election when there's virtually no chance that it will be. Accordingly, everything about those Senate lists is wrong, both what it says about who isn't up for election and who will be, and at least some of the parties (i.e. the Tasmanian Liberals) have released preselected tickets that will actually run. I've been thinking about this too... the Tasmanian Liberal Senate DD candidates are in there but currently commented out. Could we possibly include them but marked up differently, like italicised or something, with a note that italics means they are candidates in a DD only. Also, reword or add intro text for each state (which currently states that Senators elected in 2013 are not contesting, when they almost certainly will be). Just trying to think of a way which will cover both possibilities, without definitely stating one or the other. Other than the Tas Libs, has anyone released such a DD preselection order? I suppose that list was released as a political tactic and was fairly newsworthy due to the "demotion" of a sitting senator. Otherwise, to what extent can we assume that sitting Senators will recontest a double dissolution? --Canley (talk) 07:35, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

To no extent at all, except those (if any) who've publicly announced such a decision. Otherwise, all we know is the ones who've said they'd be standing at the assumed half-senate election. Some of the others who will now be up for election at a DD will surely choose to retire. I would be opposed to this as way too confusing for most people (not to mention us!). Although I agree that there is now little chance of a normal half-senate election, this page is currently about the "next federal election", which is only required to be a half-senate election until the double dissolution takes place. Perhaps a note could go under the main Senate heading to indicate the differences.

Regardless, while the switch to DD will be fairly straightforward when it happens, it seems a bit early for us to be making that switch now. Although I know most of the parties presumably have preselected DD tickets, not many have been reported that I know of, so the few that we have in some sort of order now will become even fewer. Let's just hold on a bit until the situation becomes a bit more set-in-stone. As an indicator, I would think when we move the page to "Candidates of the Australian federal election, 2016" would be an appropriate time to make the change. I've put the summaries back in, refactored for the DD. I guess we just have to search up confirmation of running order for the major parties; most or all did preselect DD tickets, but whether they were reported or not is another matter. In the meantime any tickets showing only half-Senate should really be removed if we can't find the DD order, because otherwise it's pretty misleading. Frickeg (talk) 12:43, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

SHY not contesting...?

When I saw this edit adding Jody Moate to Robert Simms in the SA Senate, I looked at http://greens.org.au/candidates/sa which lists Robert Simms and Jody Moate as Senate candidates but there's no mention of Sarah Hanson-Young... the latest I could find on news.google.com.au and google is this ABC article on 21 March 2016 saying they were both hoping to be preselected for top position. Does anyone know what date the preselection was/is and why she might not be listed on the Green SA candidate site? Timeshift (talk) 15:10, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

Well, for now it's because we're still treating it as a half-senate election until it's officially called, so she's not up for re-election anyway. List of candidate AfDs

Might be a good idea to start this section as i'm sure this won't be the last - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susan Templeman created. Unsuccessful election candidate with no other particular claim to noteability. Article created in good faith but contributor unaware that such a person fails to meet noteability. Tons of precedent. Australian Defence Veterans Party

Jeremy Davey - we have him as candidate for Longman as well as for Qld senate. ABC [1] has him as candidate for Longman. ADVP [2] site has as senate candidate. I added him for the Senate listing last night based on the ADVP page—looking at it now, it has him listed for both Longman AND the Senate for Queensland, although they seem to have removed the Longman link from the menu now. I just checked his Facebook page, and it's called "Jeremy Davey – Leader of the Veterans Party and QLD Senate Candidate" so I reckon the Senate candidature is the right one. --Canley (talk) 06:57, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Socialist alliance

Someone asked on Antony Green's blog, they're not going to publish the senate candidates until nominations close. Fair enough too, it's all over the shop, especially with the Senate dissolution. If there is no order published, just don't list them as an ordered list (maybe use line breaks or something).--Canley (talk) 05:23, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Presumably, because no one noticed they'd done preselections. However, they have now - I just hate messing around with tables. I fully admit to being lazy with the Senate, because the tables are just that much harder to work with. We'll have to fiddle with the order at some point too (sitting senators should all be on the top row), but I tend to want to wait until nominations are closed so that we can deal with it all at once. That link on the ldp website doesnt cover all the candidates they are running in this election. LDP vs Liberal Democrats

I see that someone has added a bunch of candidates from other parties, include those of the "LDP" however, since the AEC has their registered abbreviation as 'Liberal Democrats' and this is the name they are running on for the election it, imo, would make sense to relabel them on this article. 121.208.3.240 (talk) 08:45, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

We routinely use abbreviations of this kind to save space, regardless of whether it is the "official" abbreviation. Given the length of "Liberal Democrats" and the unnecessary bloating it would add to the table, this would be unnecessary. Frickeg (talk) 12:48, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

I am happy to start (esp if Canley has tables ready) but I just looked at Antony's for Tas senate [6] as a first sample to compare his with ours.

He says above his listings: "... compiled from candidate listings found on the internet... not a complete listing, nor ... possible to determine the order candidates will be listed by each party. Final candidate listings are not available until 10 June. When nominations are released, parties and candidates will be listed below in the order they are listed on the ballot paper... if you wish to notify any errors... please visit the candidate feedback page."

Labor - same / Libs - same candidates but he has in alpha order / Greens - same / APP - we don't have as yet / TAP - we don't have, their site has same as Antony / DHJ - same / FFP - same / FLX - same / JLN - same / LDP - he has only Mead, we also have Alston / MAP - we don't have yet / NXT - same / ONP - same / SCP - he has one more / CEC - we don't have yet / SEX - we don't have yet / HEMP - we don't have yet / PUP - he doesn't have / IND - he doesn't have / CDP - he doesn't have.

That's just Tas differences. We have some parties and/or candidates he doesn't and vice versa, different order for Libs. So, do we go through now and find why there are differences (ie try to determine who's more right by checking sources and party websites)... or wait til say 12 June when his will prob be up to date? Or do we just cope with another set of revisions later? My first election here so would appreciate advice as to how to help (if at all). JennyOz (talk) 10:55, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

If I can auto-generate the tables now, when the AEC releases the candidate data I can easily import it and regenerate the tables straight away. In the meantime, I should also be able to detect the differences with Antony's list tomorrow. Here are some differences I've noticed so far:

General issues

• MAP, CEC, Antipaedophile, Progressive: No listings on WP
• HEMP/Sex Party: Not listed as combined ticket on WP
• LDP: Seems to have added their own candidates on WP I suspect, several not listed on ABC though (e.g. Sam Kennard)

New South Wales

• Coalition: Three candidates missing from WP (Ok, Richards, McGahey)

Queensland

• Labor: Claire Moore is spelt wrong on ABC
• LDP: John Rooth (LDP) not listed on ABC – Rooth has a Facebook page confirming his candidacy
• LNP: Rennick and Ryan are in a different order on WP and ABC (The Australian matches the ABC order)  Fixed
• Greens: ABC has Elizabeth Ure listed, WP does not, but she is not listed on the Greens' website

South Australia

• Family First: WP has Rikki Lambert, ABC has Lucy Gixhuhi. Checked the FFP website and Lambert was incorrect, but ABC has Lucy's name spelt wrong, it's "Gichuhi"  Fixed

Victoria

• Greens: ABC has three Greens candidates missing (Coleman, Klein, Crabb), they are on the Greens Victoria website
• Labor: WP has two Labor candidates missing (Kent, Tarczon), they are on the ALP website  Fixed

Independents in Victoria

Dear compiler (HSHooks), there was a link from the Victoria Independents group to Australian Democrats (the all but defunct political party). This is inappropriate as the AEC has this Independent group for people who are not affiliated with an AEC-registered party, who are not registering as candidates in a bloc, and who are unaffiliated with each other. Nah, especially not WA. The columns aren't only for parties running in every seat - where there are only three, we've always split out the next-best thing in the past. It helps to reduce the size of the table and generally helps with readability. The other option in Victoria was Animal Justice, which I think may be running more individual candidates, but on the other hand Family First has both federal representation and has had a senator in Victoria, so I went with that. ACP

We use ACP as abbreviation for both Country and Cyclists. Doing a search down page, to say count candidates, may be misleading if readers do not think to hover or visit link. Is this a problem? JennyOz (talk) 06:34, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

I changed the Country Party ones to "Country"–however someone would have to search for the brackets or they will pick up the two CountryMinded candidates. Maybe we should change the Cyclists to that as that's how they are abbreviated in the Senate tables? --Canley (talk) 06:46, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
