editI have lived in Oro Valley for 13+ years, and have enjoyed walking in the Canada del Oro. After monsoon thunderstorms in the late summer, the CDO wash becomes a "big muddy river", since it is fairly wide in some parts. For the majority of land area, the wash is full of trees, making the viewer wonder if they are really in a desert.
Translation of "Cañada"
editAnother editor recently substituted "glen" as a translation for Cañada, and that is one meaning -- but makes no sense in local context. Our article notes that "As early as 1880, the Cañada del Oro was labeled "Gold Cañon Creek" on American maps". Another meaning of Cañada is ravine or barranca (Google Translate lists barranco, quebrada, cañada, garganta, encañada as "ravine" in English). So I think Cañada in context is best translated as "Canyon" -- perhaps this was a local variant in colonial Mexican Spanish? I used to live near the Cañada, and always heard it translated as Canyon -- and the Cañada drainage is indeed a canyon (or ravine), where it comes out of the mountains. --Pete Tillman (talk) 22:23, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
