Specification?

does anybody has any documents shows the usecases of the DSLAM & BRAS in the NW?

This paragraph:

"A DSLAM collects data traffic from multiple subscribers into a centralized point so that it can be uploaded to the router over a Frame Relay, ATM, or Ethernet connection."

seems strange, disrupting the flow of logic. It's not clear what's the relationship between BRAS and DSLAM? Are they at the same logic junction, while DSLAM is responsible for the data link, while BRAS responsible for AAA? Yubrshen (talk) 07:50, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

The Router

terminology

I think that the BRAS nomenclature is applied to classic ATM-based functions up to TR-059, while BNG is applied to Ethernet-based DSL. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.235.105.239 (talk) 22:58, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

BRAS is defined in TR-059 and may be in use earlier but the term is not used in TR-025. BNG is used (and I think introduced) in TR-101. According to TR-101 the two terms are often equivalent, but the earlier usage admits other possibilities:

"The traffic aggregated from the Access Nodes is steered to an IP node, the BRAS. In TR-025 a BRAS could be physically located either in the regional network or in the service provider network and is mainly engaged in PPP termination and tunneling. In TR-059 the BRAS is located on the edge of the regional network and its functionality is enhanced to include subscriber management, advanced IP processing, including IP QoS, and enhanced traffic management capabilities, e.g. 5-layer hierarchical shaping. So as not to confuse the use of the term BRAS, this document has adopted the term Broadband Network Gateway (BNG). A Broadband Network Gateway may encompass what is typically referred to as a BRAS (as specified in TR-092), but this is not a requirement of this architecture (see the following section 1.3)." (TR-101)
