Updates to staff and structure edit

Hello, firstly let me make you aware I work for the British Thoracic Society. Since the last update to the page a lot has changed and I wondered if it would be possible to bring some facts up to date.

In the summary box on the top right corner, the Chief Executive has changed, after 23 years Sheila Edwards stepped down and Miss Sally Welham was appointed. Also, the new Chairman from 2022 is Dr Paul Walker.

In the main text, I would like to suggest the text below, which brings up to date staff numbers, adds a reference to the governance structure, removes the Liaison committee and introduces the lay trustee instead, updates the name and number of the standing and other committees active today, and refreshes all existing archived references.

Governance and staff edit

BTS currently has eighteen members of staff and a number of other associates who deal with the day-to-day running of the Society, including a Chief Executive.[1]

BTS is managed by its Trustees, who are the officers and members of the Executive Committee [2]. The President and President-elect are elected annually by the membership. The other officers serve for three years and nominations for these posts are sought from the membership.[3] The BTS Board of Trustees includes a Lay Trustee that helps the Society to place citizens and those with respiratory disease at the centre of their work.

BTS has seven established Standing Committees, the chairs of which each sit on the Executive Committee. These Committees are [4]:

  • Education and Training Committee
  • Information Governance Committee
  • Quality Improvement Committee
  • Science and Research Committee
  • Standards of Care Committee
  • Workforce and Service Development Committee
  • Nominations Committee

The Society has two official journals: Thorax which became its official journal in 1982 [5] and BMJ Open Respiratory Research since 2013 [6] [7]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MIghtyabobo (talkcontribs) 10:28, 29 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Specialist Advisory Groups edit

Thoracic anatomy

BTS has a network of Specialist Advisory Groups which are made up of specialist professionals and provide expert support opinion to the work of the Society.[1]

Each Specialist Advisory Group focuses on a specific issue:

BTS also relies on the expertise of a number of other expert groups composed by subject experts generally from within its membership, formed ad hoc to deliver specific projects, including clinical guidelines, standards, clinical statements and a programme of clinical audits. As of January 2022 the following groups were active:

  • Lung Disease Registry Steering Group
  • Paediatric Sleep Disorders Guideline Group
  • Pleural Disease Guideline Group
  • Clinical Statement on Air Travel Group
  • Clinical Statement on the Respiratory Management of Athletes Group
  • Clinical Statement on Occupational Asthma Group
  • Clinical Statement on Ocular TB Group
  • BTS Clinical Statement on Pleural Procedures Group
  • Clinical Audit Leads
  • BTS/ARTP[2] Joint Strategy Board
  • BTS Clinical Statement on Aspiration Pneumonia and Pneumonia in those with learning disabilities Group
  • BTS Quality Standards on Bronchiectasis Group
  • MDR-TB Clinical Advice Service Steering Group
  • Air Quality Position Statement Group
  • BTS Tobacco Dependency Project Steering Group

Meetings and Short Course Programme edit

BTS holds two annual conferences; the Summer Meeting in the last week of June and the Winter Meeting which takes place at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London in the last week of November. These Meetings bring together medical professionals with an interest in respiratory medicine.

The Summer Meeting [1] is the main annual educational event, with clinical updates and the opportunity for a multi-disciplinary audience to discuss key issues and share good practice. There is also a wide-ranging programme of short courses.[2]

The BTS Winter Meeting[3] attracts over 2000 delegates each year and is the UK’s primary respiratory scientific meeting, with the emphasis on presenting updates on current respiratory research and symposia from leading researchers from all over the world. Young Investigators and Medical Students are encouraged to put forward abstracts and prizes are awarded in each category.
