Coronation edit

I don't understand why there is so much discussion of current coronation practices among existing monarchies. Considering the fact that the term can apply to children of celebrities outside of royal and noble titles, and the fact that the article itself calls the coronation definition "extremely strict", I think it does not warrant any further mention—and certainly not the extensive analysis of what circumstances are necessary for a modern royal couple to have a crown on each of their heads. Unless this subject is clarified I'll be removing those particular paragraphs. Andrei Iosifovich (talk) 21:28, 31 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The article states:

In this sense, the parent's prominence predetermines the child's role in life. A royal child, for instance, is denied the opportunity to an ordinary life because of his parent's royal rank.[3] An example of this usage can be seen in the following discussion comparing the German Kaiser William II with his grandfather, William I, and his father, Frederick III: Compare this with his grandfather, the old Emperor, who, if he had not been born in the purple, could only have been a soldier, and not, it must be added, one who could have held very high commands. Compare him again with his father; the Emperor Frederick, if he had not been born in the purple, though he certainly showed greater military capacity than the old Emperor, nevertheless would probably not have been happy or successful in any private station other than that of a great moral teacher

I fail to see how the passage - "Compare this with his grandfather, the old Emperor, etc." - demonstrates how a child "born in the purple" will be unable to have a normal childhood or life. Rather it demonstrates how one "born in the purple" will attain greater rank and standing in his life than if he had not been born to royalty. It is not demonstrating how he is denied an opportunity, it is demonstrating how he is given one (though of course i can understand the strictures and confinements that a royal family and life can create. But that's not the focus of that particular passage). So it's unclear to me — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.81.199.45 (talk) 05:20, 5 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nonsensical reference over Byzantine succession edit

Even aside from the link being broken, this article makes no mention of imperial succession, and isn't about the topic at all, just mentioning the subject of this article as an attempt to make a fun segue. In fact, the whole succession claim seems wrong, as I know of zero Byzantine Emperors that were selected ahead of older siblings for being born in the father's reign. 110.33.167.233 (talk) 11:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal edit

There's a May merge proposal to merge the stub article Porphyrogeniture to here; sounds like a good idea as the topics are (very) closely related and best discussed in one place. Klbrain (talk) 15:49, 3 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
