Recent revert edit

I've reverted Vikramsingh's addition of Devanagari because it is of no relevance on the English Wikipedia. The original was written in Gurmukhi script and so that's the only one that need be here. Devanagari-transliterations can be used on Wikipedias that use the Devangari script (Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi, Nepali etc.). Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:00, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Making article more accessible, as it was originally intended edit

  1. Devanagari can be read by a majority of those familiar with Indian languages, including Sikhs from outside of Punjab. It makes the texts readable by at least 10 as many times as many wikipedia readers. The language of the text is Braj dialect of Hindi.
  2. Sikhism is inclusive, not exclusive. It is universal not regional. It was the desire of the Sikh Gurus that their writings be accessible to as many people as possible. By deleting script readable by a large number of wikipedia readers does not serve accessiblility. Let us not shut out some people.
  3. Bichitra Natak is avaialble in both Gurmukhi and Devanagari scripts.

How many people read how many languages/scripts is of no relevance on the English Wikipedia. Content on this page is aimed at English speakers. The use of native text is useful on certain occassions (this text should be on Wikisource anyway, not here).
Again, what the Sikh gurus wished is not a basis for including content here. I can automatically convert the text into any number of Indic scripts using ICU's transformer - does that mean we should include Tamil, Gujarati, Bengali transliterations too? You're welcome to add Devanagari text to the Wikisource version if you so wish - but it really is not appropriate here. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 15:03, 6 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Similler debate- kannad Vs Marathi -I have seen on talk page of a Indian city page Belgaum
    • Wikipedia is Multy Lingual Community and already seems to have certain conventions in place in this respect.
    • Wikipedia is having Multy Lingual collaboration in place and some administrators Bots seem too working already on interwiki connectivity.
    • Please correct If I am wrong that these bots have been adding titles transliteration in all world languages, although it will not visible directly on page It will remain visible in edit page.
    • If such a facility is not there for Indian Languages then we need to start it simply because it is beneficial for refference and serch engines (I suppose)
    • Also we need to take into account India is having official three language policy, Inclusion of Hindi on this count across all India related articles need to be disussed at larger discussion forum of Wikipedia. That means Hindi article also should include one more refference to one more Indian language.
  • Fore most is I would be happy if some one translates such a nice article in more Indian languages for other language wikipedias.Specialy so In Marathi while Nanded is likely to host a majior sikh pilgrimage soon.

This seems to be an article about a Punjabi work. Devanagari, is therefore irrelevant to this article. First of all, your claim that many people in India can read Devanagari is false. It is mostly read and understood only by people in the North and some people in other parts. Even among those who can read it in the south, for example, are not comfortable reading it. And in anycase, your argument is absurd. Because if the number of people understanding a script is a concern, then Chinese script should be added to all articles.

And btw, the debate on Belgaum page was totally different For similar debate check the Vande Mataram, Sare Jahan se accha and Jana Gana Mana articles. Sarvagnya 16:34, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, makes sense. I shall be removing the devanagari sections. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nareshov (talkcontribs) 18:06, 6 May 2007 (UTC).Reply
