The reasons for this pit having strong union militancy was probably working conditions. It was the wettest pit in the UK with considerable loss of life and frequent injuries resulting from the wet conditions. My own grandfather was a desperate WW1 discharged soldier forced to work at this colliery and reckoned conditions in the colliery worse than the Western Front.AT Kunene 123 (talk) 14:18, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
