Volcano? edit

While I'm not going to change anything yet as I haven't checked for references, I'm concerned as to whether this page is accurate. I thought that the fort was iron age, rather than bronze age. And I think that the hill is not an extinct volcano itself, but that the rocks are sedimentary rocks which have buckled under various geological pressures to produce the hill we see today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.176.151.208 (talkcontribs)

It's definitely an old volcano. [1] suggests you are wrong on the other account too. — Dunc| 09:30, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
This says it's rock of volcanic origin, but the precambrian rocks there and elsewhere in Charnwood are metamorphosed sedimentary rock, so the hill's not an extinct volcano as such. I probably should have paid more attention when Trevor Ford took us all up there twenty years ago, but it was pissing down. --ajn (talk) 09:46, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to weigh in on this; I remember reading a book sometime ago about the special geology in the Charnwood area. In it, the Author said that Charnwood and surrounding area was basically a small tectonic plate that had flipped by 45 Degrees. By doing so it had revealed all the different strata of rocks and is why the landscape is how it is (craggy outcrops), and is such diversity in types or rock in the area, and why there are so many quarries (the types of rock close to the surface). So it can be rocks of "volcanic origin" but not necessarily a volcano. --With it being a fault line (or at least an old one) it would be possible for volcanoes to form, and there are other volcanoes in the area: I've read about 1 definite and two other possible volcanoes in Charnwood; and Bardon Hill near Coalville is often cited as a volcano. Bradgate Park also shows evidence of nearby volcanic eruptions. ---So in short, both options are very possible. But I've not been able to find any sources saying for definite one way or another. ----Rushton2010 (talk) 22:02, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
