Confusion over German strength

The infobox makes no mention of German destroyers, although some are listed under casualties. The article clearly says there were destroyers on the German side, but I can't work out how many. Yorkist (talk) 16:04, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

There were no German destroyers in ww1. Instead all destroyer like vessels were classified as torpedoboats no matter the size of the vessel. This leads to some confusion in reading accounts of this and other battles because the terms torpedoboat and destroyer are often used interchanglebly. The german destroyers sunk in this battle were actually termed torpedo boats by the german navy, but classified as destroyers in enemy recognition guides and the like.

comments and WPGermany assessment

I have no quibble with the B rating, although I think the text could use some serious "tweaking" for logic, etc., which I suppose will happen on the way to "A" and "FA"....? For example, when in the section on the Mainz: At 12.20 her captain ordered his ship to be scuttled and the crew to abandon ship. Probably this sort of thing as reversed, crew abandons, then order to scuttle. We should also agree on the date of the British declaration of war...is it the 4th or the 5th? See a time line here.

I uploaded File:Sinking of Mainz.jpg from this source, which says it's SMS Mainz that's sinking. But as someone said on the image's talk page, the ship had three funnels, but the image only appears to have one. Is it possible the caption from the source is incorrect? The picture in the infobox is fake. The ship was painted light grey and she looked great even when dying. Here you can find this picure in a better quality. Should be added to Commons. I think the Mainz was retouched on the infobox-picture to seem dark and menacing - for propagandistic reasans. --Andreas (talk) 12:46, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
