Population entry is incorrect

edit

There is also a missing citation, where the population was indicated. According to the ethnography [[B.A.T.A.M ]] by Erik Eriksen, the population was approximately 60,000 in the pre-industrial era, and 600,000 in the post-industrial era. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ziniai (talkcontribs) 01:13, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Loga Batam.jpg

edit

Image:Loga Batam.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

no details about ethnic breakdown and social situation of Batam

edit

1) I feel the ethnic profile of the population needs to be developped or at least balanced.

I feel the island population profile goes further than just "malay" and "Chinese" when it is composed of workers coming from all corners and all communities of Indonesia, Indonesian Chinese being just one minority among others: "malay" is also not appropriate as those ethnic groups (Malay being only one of the many Indonesian communities like Batak, Flores..) do not form an homogeneous population.

Furthermore is there clearly a "majority" in Batam in terms of population?

I do not have detailed figures, but I feel this point should be developped.

2) I mentionned in an earlier version and it has disappeared since, but what about the social unbalance created by this massive gathering of migrants from different ethnic groups? There has been clashes between "Indonesian" communities in the past and I believe it is an aspect of Batam that needs to be included, even if that might be a potentially controversal issue. Wrong reference to Malay (ethnic)

edit

We have differentiated between Malay (ethnic) and Malay (race). Malay (ethnic) is a certain ethnic living some part of Malaysia and some part of Indonesia, especially north and east of Sumatera, and islands of Riau. Malay (race) consists of most inhabitants of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. Some part of Indonesia the inhabitants also don't belong to Malay race, these include most inhabitants of Papua, Maluku islands, Nusa Tenggara Islands, Timorese, and also Chinese and Arabs.

In the view of Indonesian, speaking Bahasa Indonesia is not the same as speaking Bahasa Melayu (bahasa means language), while in the mind set of Malaysians and Singaporeans, they do. In Indonesians mind set, Aceh ethnic, Batak ethnic, Javanese, Makassar ethnic are not included as Malay (ethnic), while in Malaysians and Singaporean mind set they do. Even more, some ethnics in Indonesia (geographically, genealogically) really are not even considered as Malay race, e.g. Flores ethnic, indigenous people of Papua and Maluku islands. They are Australoids.

The reference that says Batam inhabitants is 85% Malays and 14% Chinese is wrong, because it describe the races common to Malaysians and Singaporeans only, yet wiki link is pointing to Malay (as in ethnic). The general view by South East Asians population (which in term of numbers Indonesians are much greater than population of Malaysia and Singapore combined), is totally of different concept. The wiki should not choose the minority point of view as general concept, and should explain their different view as needed.

In Batam, Indonesians as well as inhabitants of Batam, as well as official sources from local government don't mix the population of Batak ethnic, Javanese (which definitely are not considered Malay ethnic), Minang ethnic (which consider themselves different from Malay ethnic). Flores ethnic is even counted as Malay (ethnic) wrongly even when they are not even of Malay race.
