What is a barrio and barrio-pueblo? edit

@Beland: The US Census definition is found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20170513190743/https://factfinder.census.gov/help/en/barrio.htm and states "Along with Barrio-Pueblo, the primary legal subdivision of municipios in Puerto Rico. Similar to the minor civil divisions (MCDs) used for reporting census data in 29 states of the United States." Barrios and subbarrios existed before they were used by the US Census. You updated the article to say barrio = MCD but the definition in the census states "similar to..." --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 02:45, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@The Eloquent Peasant: Census documents are sometimes self-contradictory. If you peek at [1] (e.g. page 7-12), you'll see barrios referred to as MCDs. I think it's safe to say "minor civil division" is a generic term that includes barrios and other divisions in U.S. states and territories. One might say barrios are similar to other types of MCD, though arguably they are pretty diverse in a lot of ways. -- Beland (talk) 18:02, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
... and subbarrios are treated as sub-MCDs. I wonder how the barrios and subbarios are treated by other entities, other than the US census. I know that for property titles, the barrio is included (as a point of reference) in the official paperwork / title, however, the barrio is NOT needed on a package or envelope to someone in P.R. We should probably be including other things 'barrio' is used for (and finding sources also). This article may already mention a bit of that. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 18:56, 21 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
It does. I was only here because I was fixing up coverage of MCDs; feel free to add any further information you find in reliable sources. -- Beland (talk) 16:31, 22 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Beland:. I never knew that PR had "unorganized water". I knew that that some subdivisions of Egypt have unorganized sections but I didn't know PR has "unorganized water" as you've stated in the MCD article. May I ask where I may read up on that? Only 'cause it's the first time I've seen that. Thanks. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 20:15, 22 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
The (archived) census.gov citation for that is at the top of Minor civil division#Minor civil divisions by state and territory. I don't know if there's a difference between territorial and federal waters in Puerto Rico, but would be curious to find out. (As discussed in Tidelands.) -- 00:03, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
