The page says that medium of instruction is English. While it is true officially, any one who has studied in BUET knows for a fact that it is only the exams which are conducted in English. All the classroom teaching take place in Bangla, even when there are foreign students in the classroom Rajib98 (talk) 19:43, 21 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey, there should be more images of BUET in wikipedia :( I don't get it...so many talented grads have graduated from this institution yet very few actually care to expose its credentials to the world!! If it wasn't for Rana bhai, the existence of this page would've been jeopardised too. The current teachers in BUET should care more about the current world instead of updating their site with MS Frontpage 97 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Atunu (talkcontribs).

Neutrality edit

The remarks in the opening paragraph "In Bangladesh, being part of BUET is a prestigious feeling and can be viewed analogous to be part of MIT in USA. BUET is respected for its international quality teaching and only the very best talents of the country can get into this university through unbelievable competition." - seems somewhat "emotional" and "flowery" to me. Isn't it better just to stick to the facts?

Unless someone disagrees I propose to change the wording as:

"In Bangladesh, being part of BUET is considered a prestigious achievement. BUET is respected for its international quality of teaching and only the very best talents of the country can get into this university through a highly competitive admission test." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Armanaziz (talkcontribs).

I agree. The language is somewhat too flowery. Be bold and make the changes. Thanks. --Ragib 16:55, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fazlur Rahman Khan edit

Dr FR Khan is not a BUET alumnus. Should he be listed as an alumnus? himu 16:13, 19 September 2006 (UTC) ohaiderReply

Here is the fact: In Encyclopaedia Britanica, it is stated that he obtained bachalor's degree in engineering from the University of Dhaka. Check in the online version [1] "After obtaining a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Dacca in 1950..."

Now, from the history of BUET, "After the partition of India in 1947, it was upgraded to Ahsanullah Engineering College, as a Faculty of Engineering under the University of Dhaka, offering four-year bachelor's courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering...."

POV edit

"In Bangladesh, being part of BUET is considered a prestigious achievement. BUET is respected for its international quality of teaching and only the very best talents of the country can get into this university through a highly competitive admission test."

You call that NPOV? OMG! I guess, I have seen advertising brochures that depend less on peaock words and blatant unsourced claims. (Case in point - the Voxwagen Lemon campaign by Ogilvy and Mathers)

And, then - "The BUET community(faculty, students and stuffs) are proud to find BUET alumni all over the world in prestigious and key positions. In USA, BUET has its talents contributing to the highest level."

What is this? A pamphlet to draw people to BUET? Who stated that they are proud? Where did they say that? How did we found out that they were proud and all that crap? Please, check the following to keep the article (as well as other artciles on Bangladesh education) advertisement free:

There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative 'I heard it somewhere' pseudo information is to be tagged with a 'needs a cite' tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced. This is true of all information, but it is particularly true of negative information about living persons." (See: WP:VERIFY)

I have already notified User:Ragib on the problem. Please, let me know on my talk page which other admins I can involve into finding a solution for this problem. Yours - Aditya Kabir 05:08, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm late to reply, but yes, I agree with you on the POVisness of the text. This needs to be cleaned up. Thanks. --Ragib 04:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Number of faculties and students edit

The infobox mention the enrollment of faculties are 350 and students are 4000. But article itself says, 5000 students are enrolled in this univ and the number of teachers is over 400. It's confusing. Is there any reference that shows different number of faculties and students? --NAHID 20:13, 21 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

From official BUET website ([2]) "About 5500 students are pursuing undergraduate and postgradute studies..." and "A total of about five hundred teachers are teaching in these departments..." Sarwar Erfan 18:19, 11 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

As of 2022, the official figure is "over 600 faculty members and over 10000 undergraduate and graduate students" from https://www.buet.ac.bd/web/#/about/1 103.94.135.29 (talk) 06:50, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Library and Alumni edit

I've created the library section and taken help from BUET official website.I know that every department has their departmental library so I've included this , but I've no reference. can anyone help regarding this? In our alumni section only one distinguish alumni is provided. Is there no one else?! Tanvir che (talk) 06:52, 10 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, we had List of notable BUET alumni. The entry got deleted via WP:PROD (see the notice box) as none of alumni had any article exist on WP. Their notability was in question.--NAHID 07:13, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Who said you that none of the BUET alumni had any article exist on WP? Just check yourself. I found some articles of BUET alumni like Mohammad Kaykobad, Anisul Hoque, Shafi Imam Rumi in WP. I am sure you will get many more if you search. Hasan 16:52, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, Prof. Kaykobad is not a BUET alumnus. --Ragib (talk) 06:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please Think edit

In the first paragraph it is written “Many international students prefer this university because, it offers a very high standard of education and low expense.[citation needed]”

Here the need of citation is unnecessary. Because 1. Here expense is very low as it is a government university. 2. In this article already there are two references of it academic excellence. So, if anyone questions about the educational standard of BUET then it is only his personal point of view which is not accepted according to WP policy.

So, [citation needed] tag should be removed. What do you think?

MåhmüÐ 20:11, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nope, this is a claim made without any proof. How do we know that International students prefer this university and not the other 50+ universities of Bangladesh? There are also many other Govt. universities, so your first argument doesn't hold. You need citations from third parties to back up the sentence. --Ragib (talk) 22:00, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Okey Ragib vai, no need to remove. I focused only the second to arguments (low expense and high standard of education) as the tag is there. Thanks. MåhmüÐ 09:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the "low expense" part. The expense in BUET is low only when compared to the private universities. But, that should not be done. Because, they are on different track. BUET's cost is lower because Govt gives subsidy.

And, recently, among the public engineering universities, BUET's cost is highest. BUET is increasing every fee periodically. The admission cost (registration fees) of BUET is highest among all the public universities of Bangladesh.

The cost of admission forms (undergrad) is more than some private universities (i.e. North South University)

I dont know if it is worth mention, but I changed the Logo. The new one has transparent background, and does not show white border

--Smcbuet (talk) 18:59, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The new logo has no licensing information, and will be removed from commons soon. So, I'm restoring the old logo for the time being. --Ragib (talk) 20:33, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have uploaded the new logo with proper licensing info. Please let me know if the licensing is appropriate. Thanks --Smcbuet (talk) 17:22, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

About trivia tag edit

Ragib vai, what should we do to remove the “trivia” tag from the article? Do you think all should be removed in the Activities section?

I think the heading of the section should be “Achievements” instead of “Activities”. If the heading is “Achievements” then why do you think the information are irrelevant?

MåhmüÐ 16:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lists of trivia information shouldn't be added to articles, Rather, the information should be merged into other sections, where appropriate. All of the things mentioned here are student activities, and many other universities regularly have many such distinctions. Also, much of the 7 or 8 bullet points can be described in one sentence as BUET students have participated and won awards in ACM ICPC, IEEE Myron Zucker student design contest, etc etc. Honorable mentions are not much of an achievement, and claiming so would not be a good thing. --Ragib (talk) 21:18, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Trivia tag restored, since the issue does not seem to be resolved. --Sabih 17:00, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Faculties and departments edit

This section has some links that keep redirecting to this same page. This makes no sense. Either there should be individual pages for each department or to the universities' web-site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.141.27.167 (talk) 23:20, 10 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ranking edit

I removed the huge section on ranking since at least two thirds of it was irrelevant and redundant (BUET is not included in two rankings, so their methodologies are irrelevant here). As for the QS ranking, "when searched manually" is not really a reliable statement. Unless a reference is provided about the claimed rank, that can't be included here based on whoever searched it "manually". The rest of that subsection was quite irrelevant and redundant. --Ragib (talk) 07:15, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

6, not 5 faculties now in BUET edit

The webpage of BUET does not yet (as of 29 spetermber 2022) report splitting the faculty of Engineering into Faculty of Science (with Physics, Chemistry, Math) and Faculty of Chemical and Materials Engineering (with ChE, MME, PMRE, NCE) although name change of GCE to NCE is well-documented in website. Can you find out a legimate way to incorporate this data into this page? 103.94.135.29 (talk) 06:45, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
