Name of Article edit

This article should be at either J.C. Bancroft Davis or Bancroft Davis. Which? Everyking 00:49, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I put the article at "John Chandler Bancroft Davis" because that was how he is listed in the "Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court"--and that is what I was going by in compiling articles on him and the other SCOTUS reporters. However, after your query I checked and found the article in the "American National Biography" is at "Bancroft Davis". I vote to leave him where he is and for now, I'm putting redirects at the alternatives to his name. PedanticallySpeaking 19:02, Sep 9, 2004 (UTC)

But we're supposed to title articles about people according to the most common form of their name, so it shouldn't be at this title. Everyking 19:55, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Look, I have a copy of the Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court myself, and it frequently gives entries under the full names of people without regard to the common convention; see for instance the entries on Rehnquist and Hugo Black. I'll move it to Bancroft Davis in accordance with Wikipedia style unless some argument can be made in favor of the longer title. Everyking 17:41, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Bancroft Davis' appointment as reporter for the Supreme Court edit

just an outside remark that I would find it useful if someone knows/can credibly describe how and by whom Davis was appointed to the position of SCOTUS reporter? Did the Chief Justice do it? Others with influence got him that position? What were the politics behind the appointment? I've no idea, but it would be valuable to know in this article if anyone is familiar with the details of that history. 67.187.198.110 (talk) 18:05, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
