Talk:Area code 807

Latest comment: 6 years ago by InternetArchiveBot in topic External links modified

Does anyone know why this area code was created? There are so few phone lines in 807 that there must have been some geographical reason or perhaps the time zone or the fact that it was serviced by Thunder Bay Telephone and not Bell. Anyone know for sure? Blacknail 17:19, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

It was created to free up local codes for growing areas in Central Ontario like Barrie/Orillia, Sudbury/Sault Ste Marie, Peterborough, etc. Instead of inconveniencing them with having to use a new area, they gave one to the Northwest which impacted the least amount of people. 807 actually does have a fair amount of local codes, as each rural community tends to have it's own local code. The numbers listed here are barely have of the local codes in use up here. Vidioman 02:15, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, area code 705 was substantially underused in 1962, and even as late as the 1980s, 705 could have accommodated all the services in 807. The actual reason was for efficiency in the routing of calls. Calls from Western Canada to points in Northwestern Ontario, such as Thunder Bay, would have to be routed to Sudbury, Barrie or Peterborough -- wherever the nexus of 705 was at the time -- before being routed back to the actual destination.
By assigning a separate area code, switching equipment in Western Canada could route directly to the 807 nexus in Thunder Bay, then be sent to an end office over a much shorter distance. By the late 1960s, however, equipment was much more efficient and able to sort destinations by more than just the area code, but it was pointless then to reamalgamate.
It would have been wise of Bell Canada to avoid duplicate assignments in Northern Ontario so that, if necessary at a later date (such as now with 705 relief pending), exchanges in northeastern Ontario could have been transferred from 705 to 807. GBC (talk) 08:39, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
That makes more sense. :) Any way to work that into the article? vıdıoman 19:58, 8 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

was considered, but rejected, as overlay edit

I notice this paragraph which apparently notes that 807 was considered also as an overlay for 705:

"Since it is less than 30% used and has a CNAC estimated exhaust year of AD 2160, a plan to overlay the nearly exhausted area code 705 while remaining the only area code covering its current area was considered, but was not recommended and will not be implemented due to potential confusion. As a result, 807 is the only area code in Ontario not overlaid and still with 7-digit dialing."

Apparently, this rejected proposal would have had 807 behaving like area 321 in Florida. Area 321 is the only area code in places like Cocoa Beach & Cape Canaveral, but other prefixes in area 321 are serving as overlay on area 407 (Orlando, etc.).

The article for area 705 in Ontario says it's now being overlaid with area code 249, so apparently that is taking the place of this rejected proposal for area code 807. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.82 (talk) 19:22, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
