I think many of the topics that currently re-direct here could do with their own full articles, specifically distant signal and shunt signal. There's a lot of details, especially when taking a global perspective, that could go into those articles. The 3 sentence blurb doesn't do these classes of signal justice and is a poor resource for anyone clicking over from a discussion of approach locking or various train protection technologies.Sturmovik (talk) 18:30, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Error in classification of signals and othe errors in the article edit
Signals are classfied on various grounds. First is on the basis of station locations. While passing a station the driver first meets indication in form ring and two lines above and below it. This is not actually signal but a bord indicating that signal is ahead. Then comes outer or distant signal. Thenhome signal followed by starter at the end of platform after crossing it followed by advance starter. Aspect may be two three or four. Similarly, distant signal have two aspects Stop (red) and Go (green).(In India) The driver has to stop at distant signal if it is ON but can paas it at danger and can proceed up to home signal but cannot pass hone signal if it is ON or written order to pass it.
In the article information is presented in shabby, ambiguous form and its not clear and informative. Aspect of signals (Stop) are mixed with type of signals. Similarly main lines signals and yard or station signals for shunting are mixed. This is because person who writes doesn't have railway working knowledge. Error: The article doesn't clarify simply the types of signals easy to understand.

Types of signals. Based on A. Function: Stop, Warner, Disc, Colored. B. Location: Outer/Distant, Home, Starter, Advance. C. Purpose: Routing, Repeater, Call On. D. Operation: Hand, Fixed, Detonating.
