Removal of quotes / replaced with synthesis edit

NGB removed accurate, in-context and well sourced quotes from two US congressmen, Kanjorski and Ackerman made during Vollmer's testimony before the House Committee on Financial Services subcommittee and replaced them with his synthesis of the event. This was explained as "Currently implies that Vollmer left the SEC as a consequence of the Congressional hearing, which isn't supported by the sources." This edit summary doesn't match the action. Taken together, it smacks of POV and has been reverted to the representative's own words. 17:28, 14 April 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Toddst1 (talkcontribs) 17:28, 14 April 2009

There are two separate issues here. The first, and most important, is that, currently, the article implies that Vollmer left the SEC because of his performance at the Congressional hearing. This implication is not in any way supported by the sources cited and is a WP:V and WP:BLP problem that should be dealt with. The misrepresentation is, additionally, the subject of an open complaint from the subject of the article (OTRS ticket #2009041410040121). The article should describe the congressional hearing and state that Vollmer left the SEC as the separate events that the currently cited sources suggest they are, and allow the reader to draw their own conclusions. Fixing this problem should be totally uncontroversial, as the current implication of the paragraph is not in any way verifiable, so I've edited the article once again to remove the implication (and also to reinstate the accurate lead-in paragraph, which your reversion had rendered false).
The second issue is whether it's necessary to include verbatim quotations from the Congressional hearing. I don't believe it is, since anyone interested can follow the citations to the sources and read the details for themselves. The article at the moment is unwholesomely biased towards one incident and our coverage of that incident is unwholesomely biased to criticism of the article's subject: we're steering dangerously close to a violation of WP:NPOV. To describe the replacement of direct criticism of Vollmer with a statement saying he was criticised (and links to full details in source material) as a 'synthesis' in the sense of the link you provide to our prohibition against original research is nonsense: saying that the SEC was criticsed by the two Congressmen is hardly drawing 'a conclusion that is not stated explicitly by any of the sources'. --Nick Boalch\talk 17:51, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
The SEC wasn't criticized - the people testifying were. Read the sources, look at the testimony. Feel free to add other stuff about the subject's extremely short tenure as GC to balance it out if you feel NPOV is not there. I suspect this is the subject's most notable contribution as I haven't been able to find anything else documented. I've looked. Toddst1 (talk) 00:31, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm happy with that section of the article as it currently stands -- are you?
You're right -- the problem we have here is that apart from his short period as Acting General Council at the SEC he's pretty much NN, which is going to make it difficult for us to find reliable sources for anything else he's done in his career, even if they were worth including in the article. I think currently the article steers a reasonable course: we give a proper description of the one thing he's notable for -- his period as SEC General Counsel -- without making it look like that Congressional hearing was the only thing he did in his life. --Nick Boalch\talk 09:51, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
The addition of the CNN transcript is very useful, incidentally. --Nick Boalch\talk 09:53, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
